The Master of Arts (M.A.) with a concentration in Creative Writing is a small, intensive and supportive workshop-based program that draws graduate students of diverse ages and backgrounds from around the country. In addition to traditional genre studies, workshops now reflect faculty interests in poetic form, contemporary British multi-media and performance poetry, creative non-fiction and postmodern fiction, and provide students access to rigorous study of the field as well as breadth in areas of contemporary experimentation.

You may wish to visit the Creative Writing program website.

The program’s core consists of four practice-oriented workshops, each taught by a different faculty member, in which student writing provides the primary material of discussion. Students also take Issues in Creative Writing, a course devoted to questions of theory and practice, and three literature seminars, usually in contemporary British and American literature. Students write a thesis and complete a final oral defense.

Almost all students admitted to the M.A. program in Creative Writing hold generous Graduate Assistantships, teaching two sections of first-year composition in the College Composition program during their first year in the program, and three during the second. A new program allows selected second-year students to teach an introduction to creative writing. During their first year, students also enroll in a full-year workshop that supports their classroom teaching experience and a two-credit introduction to issues of the profession required of new M.A. and Ph.D. students in all degree programs.

For those applicants who do not wish to be considered for a teaching assistantship, other assistantship opportunities are available: please click on Assistantships and Awards on the navigation bar at the right for further information.
