THE PROBLEM:
Create a conversation among people
who use different discourses of leadership and different discourses of culture
in order to better understand the intersection between leadership and culture in schooling.
On June 6 and 7, 2002 faculty and students of the Department of Educational Leadership at Miami University (EDL) gathered in Oxford, Ohio to continue their on-going conversations on culture and leadership in schools. Sponsored by the Miami Initiative on Leadership, Culture, and Schooling, members of the department were joined by 8 invited guests. Half of the guests were well-known scholars in the study of culture and half were well-known scholars in the study of leadership. The 8 were Judy Alston, Jackie Blount, Colleen Capper, Greg Dimitriadis, Patti Lather, Spencer Maxcy, Peter McLaren, and Khaula Murtadha. Out of this 2 day discussion Richard Quantz isolated 59 questions that had been raised by the discussants. These 59 questions were then sorted into 7 categories. We present these 7 categories here. You may click on a category to view the subset of questions for each category. These questions are not all inclusive, but they do show the wide ranging problems that concern people when they consider the intersection of leadership, culture, and schooling. The Initiative Anthology is seeking essays or comments from our readers about these questions. We invite you to select one or more of them write down your thoughts and submit them to the email address above. The submissions may be submitted for any one of the 3 sections as described above. Questions of Leadership and Social Locations:
