Graduate Program Admission Procedures
General Admission Information 1. Students from diverse undergraduate disciplines (e.g., biological sciences, social sciences, humanities, education, physical and health education) will be considered for admission by the PHS Department. It is important to note, however, that individual degree program areas will be looking for applicants with particular undergraduate academic experiences which relate to that program area (e.g., Exercise Science program area will look for students with undergraduate coursework in chemistry, human biology, and physiology). 2. To be considered for admission to the PHS graduate program, all applicants should have a cumulative undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.00 (on a four-point scale). 3. Admission to the PHS Department's graduate programs is generally a competitive process. Over 100 applications are received each year, and approximately 60 of those applicants are admitted to the program. In addition, approximately 25 of the admitted applicants are awarded graduate teaching assistantships each year. 4. If you are interested in applying for admission to one of the PHS graduate degree programs, then please read the following information carefully and follow all application procedures completely. Specific Directions for Applying to the PHS Graduate Program of Studies NOTE: All applicants must submit all of the following materials. Failure to submit all materials will result in a delay in the processing of your application. Your application file will not be processed by the Admissions/Award Committee until all materials are submitted. 1. A Completed Graduate School Application Form (see the application form which is provided at the back of the Miami University Graduate Study Booklet). Please follow all directions in filling out this form. Mail the completed form, along with a non-refundable application fee of $35.00 to: The Graduate
School 2. Two Official Transcripts From Your Undergraduate Institution (Miami University graduates need to supply only one official transcript). In addition, if you have completed graduate level coursework at any other institution, you will also need to send two official transcripts from those institutions. Have all transcripts sent to The Graduate School at Miami University (see address listed in #1 above). 3. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) OR Miller Analogies Test (MAT) Scores. One of these sets of scores is required for all applicants. Your application for admission to the PHS Department will not be processed until these scores are received. NOTE: When registering for either the GRE or the MAT, specify that you wish your scores to be sent to the Physical Education, Health and Sport Studies Department at Miami University. For the GRE, our university code is R1463 (Miami University of Ohio) , and our departmental code is 3909 (Physical Education). Further information about either the GRE or the MAT can be obtained from your undergraduate institution or from any university or college in your area. Alternatively, you can call the Miami University Graduate School at (513) 529-4125. 4. Three Letters of Recommendation. It is imperative that these letters address your academic competence. Thus, it is strongly recommended that at least two of the three letters of recommendation are written by individuals who are familiar with your previous academic work (e.g., instructors or professors from your undergraduate institution). In contrast, letters from coaches or job supervisors are typically less helpful for your admission to the PHS program because they provide little information regarding your academic abilities (e.g., your writing competencies, your ability to think critically and logically, the depth of your academic knowledge, etc.). All letters of recommendation should be addressed and sent to: Graduate
Coordinator 5. A Completed PHS Department Graduate Student Application Form OR a Completed Application for a Graduate Teaching Assistantship in the PHS Department. If you wish to apply for a graduate teaching assistantship, then you should complete and submit the PHS Department's Application for a Graduate Teaching Assistantship. If you wish to apply for admission to the PHS Department but do not want to be considered for a graduate teaching assistantship, then you should complete and submit the PHS Department's Graduate Student Application Form. Both forms should be enclosed in this packet of materials. Complete the appropriate application form and send to: Graduate Coordinator by mail or by e-mail (edwardjl@muohio.edu) - as a word document attachment. Download Graduate Assistant Application Form. Download Graduate Student Application Form. 6. Optional Materials:
In addition to the above required materials, you may choose to
include in your application packet a vita or resume as well as any other
papers or articles which you think provide evidence of your ability to
do graduate level academic work. These additional materials should be
sent to the graduate Coordinator by mail or e-mail - as a world document
attachment file. |
