Scholarly and Professional Focus:
My scholarship focuses on the professional preparation of teachers within health education, especially the ways in which health education has ties with other academic disciplines in education (preK-16). To date, health education has had

only implicit ties to the education literature, borrowing mostly from the behavioral science literatures of psychology and sociology, and to a lesser extent, the historical roots of medicine. My primary interest is the relationship between education and health which explicitly connects health education to the field of public education rather than a more typical focus on public health. Although I am interested in how both public education and public health inform the discipline of health education, my developing work in educational renewal involves critical reflection and interpretation on how to frame these issues for future teachers, including teacher educators. The following are the foci of my research, teaching, and service:

(1) How constructivism theory supports teachers to understand and think critically about their ongoing decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment, including the triadic effect of these factors on all participants in the teaching-learning process;

(2) How the design and development of unique practice-oriented, teaching-learning curricula and technologies can promote topics, concepts, and skills across the preK-16 curriculum for the ongoing development of health literacy; and

(3) How to prepare preK-12 teachers to team with health and education professionals to implement the Coordinated School Health Program model advanced by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, especially the role that interprofessional collaboration plays in improving the health and academic status of children and youth in school-community settings.
