Melissa Ann Chase, Ph.D.

Position :

Assistant Professor

Scholarly Focus:
My scholarly focus has been in the area of self-efficacy beliefs and motivation. My primary research interests are in the area of self-efficacy theory as it applies to teacher effectiveness, motivation, teacher efficacy, and determinants of efficacy beliefs. I am particularly interested in how teacher education programs can prepare more efficacious and motivated teachers and what influence these teachers will have on student outcomes. My main focus in student outcomes is on children’s development of self-efficacy and motivation to participate in physical education, sport, and exercise.

My secondary research interest has been in the relationship between self-efficacy and athletic performance in physical activities and sport. I am interested in how the reciprocal cycle of self-efficacy and performance can be enhanced with athletes of all ages and coaches. My research has focused on how feedback, modeling, coaching techniques, and gender impact self-efficacy beliefs. In all my research, I have concentrated on improving the measurement of self-efficacy and providing a better developmental perspective for measuring children's beliefs.
