Students assist Nigerian village
8/7/08
A Nigerian clinic has greater access to public health and medical resources thanks to a donation from Miami University students participating in a study abroad program.
Students in an eight-week international health summer program directed by Reginald Fennell, professor of kinesiology and health, donated a Blue Trunk Library to a medical rehabilitation facility on the University of Nigeria Enugu campus.
Students chose to donate the library, a World Health Organization sponsored resource, after meeting Veronica Umeasiegbu, a WHO intern from the village who attends the University of Pittsburgh.
"This is the second year that students have donated a Blue Trunk Library," says Fennell. "The trunks cost $2,000 and this contribution demonstrates (the students') commitment to their course of study."
Students attended classes at the Universite de Bourgogne in Dijon, France and seminars in Paris and Geneva on international organizations including WHO, the World Trade Organization and Doctors without Borders.
The Miami sponsored international health program is in its eighth year.
