Two Miami University undergraduates will be presenting the results of their summer research projects on metabolism at the American College of Sports Medicine’s (ACSM) National conference in Seattle on May 28.
Brittney Bernardoni, an exercise science major and Spanish minor, and Nicole Mitchell, an interdisciplinary business major, conducted the work with Jeffrey Potteiger, professor of kinesiology and health and director of Miami’s Center for Health Enhancement.
Both students are pre-meds and also are members of Miami’s track and field team. They were among 100 Miami students awarded 2008 Undergraduate Summer Scholar research grants in a program that provides an opportunity to work one-on-one with a faculty member on a research or creative project. Summer Scholars receive 12 credit hours and a stipend of $2,600 plus additional funding for expenses.
Bernardoni studied the effects of meal composition ingestion following exercise in women of varying body types while Mitchell looked at the effects of carbohydrate ingestion during exercise in women of varying body types. The findings of their research will help women design better nutrition and exercise programs for improving individual health.
It is highly unusual for undergraduate students to be asked to present oral papers at the national meeting of ACSM, which is the largest and most respected sports medicine and exercise science organization in the world with over 20,000 national and international members, said Potteiger.
The invitation is a reflection of the quality of their work, he said, adding that both will publish their results in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
