Student receives national award

1/10/09Award ceremony

Alexandria Espy, a health studies major, received the Legacy Award at the Black Student Leadership Development Conference held in Washington, D.C. Jan. 8-11.

The award, which includes a $500 prize, recognizes the accomplishments of a sophomore college student who has demonstrated leadership potential, academic excellence, community service and a commitment to continuing the legacy of building on unfinished dreams and visions to liberate people.

The selection committee said of Espy was selected “not only for her leadership but for drive, charisma and ability to engage others to make the world a better place.”

Espy, from Cincinnati’s Lincoln Heights community, is treasurer for the NAACP student chapter at Miami. She participates in Miami’s multicultural leadership program and other student leadership programs.

The conference, presented by the Stuart Educational Leadership Group, is a three-day event designed to create multiethnic, culturally sensitive leaders who will impact their campuses, communities, work places and the world.
