Educational Leadership

Undergraduate Programs

While the Department of Educational Leadership (EDL) does not offer any undergraduate majors, it does provide a number of popular courses in leadership, career development, and student affairs. The undergraduate offerings also include two courses that are requirements for a bachelor’s degree in teacher education, a Miami Plan for Liberal Education thematic sequence in Cultural Studies and Public Life, and a Miami Plan capstone course.

Thematic Sequence EDL 1 Cultural Studies and Public Life:

This thematic sequence assists in understanding how culture helps construct public life thuogh deliberate and unwitting actions of people.  Therefore, the coursework reveals one way that individuals can play an active role in the public life of society.  Cultural studies is concerned with the struggles over meaning that reshape and define cultures.  This sequence studies contemporary cultural productions, with an emphasis on mass and popular culture and youth subcultures including minoritiy subcultures such as those associated with African American and Latin communities. 

  • EDL 204: Sociocultural Studies in Education (3 credits) (MPF)   OR      BWS/KNH 292 Dance, Culture & Contexts (3 credits (MPF)   OR COM/FST 205 American Film as Communication (3 credits)                                    
  • EDL 282: Cultural Studies, Power, and Education (3 credits) (MPF)
