HOW DOES AN UNDERGRADUATE
GET INTO YOUR LICENSURE PROGRAM?
You begin as a pre-major in the licensure program of your choice. After a minimum of twelve credit hours at Miami , you should apply to the cohort of your choice. Admission to a cohort is determined by several factors, but primarily the GPA at Miami after a minimum of 12 credit hours with earned letter grades in Miami Plan courses. These credits may not include transfer credits, audits, or incomplete grades. Students must also take Praxis I and score 173 on reading, 172 on math, and 172 on writing.

WHAT ARE YOUR MINIMUM SCORES
REQUIRED ON PRAXIS I?
You must earn 173 on reading, 172 on math, and 172 on writing. You might want to go ahead and take Praxis I now, so you will have that requirement out of the way. Just go to http://www.ets.org for more information about Praxis I.

COHORT? WHAT IS A COHORT?
The cohort simply refers to the group of people who take their methods coursework together. The methods coursework (aka "cohort") is usually done in the junior year, but could be in the senior year. When the cohort is done depends on a number of factors, such as changes of major, additional majors, additional minors, or studying abroad.

WHEN DO I APPLY FOR A COHORT?
Students are considered for cohorts at least one year prior
to beginning the methods courses. However, since students
may apply for cohorts more than a year before they are ready
to take their methodology courses, the most competitive cohorts
are usually filled at least a year in advance. For example,
in the 2004-05 academic year, the early childhood faculty
will choose the students for the 2006-2007 cohort. There are
specific application deadlines for each of the cohorts. Usually,
early and middle childhood cohorts have Feb. 1 and May 1 deadlines,
while adolescent cohorts have a May 1 deadline. Check with
the Department of Teacher Education the first semester of
your first year, to verify cohort application deadlines.

ARE YOUR PROGRAMS 4-YEAR OR
5-YEAR? A student who begins Miami University as a pre-major in a
licensure program in Teacher Education, who applies for and
is admitted to a cohort during the first year, and who does
not add other majors, minors, or study abroad, should be able
to finish an entire licensure program (including student teaching)
in four years.

WHAT HIGH SCHOOL COURSES SHOULD
I TAKE TO HELP ME PREPARE TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN A LICENSURE PROGRAM AT MIAMI ?
There are no specific high school courses that will specifically prepare
you for education programs. Of course, if you plan to go into
mathematics, sciences, or foreign languages, you should continue
taking high school courses in those areas and complete the
highest levels you can.

I'M THINKING ABOUT TRANSFERRING
TO MIAMI . CAN I GET RIGHT INTO A COHORT?
The admissions office may have told you to check with the department of Teacher Education because of our selective admission policy and the competitiveness of our programs. Admission to Miami University is not the same as admission to any specific program within the University. In the Department of Teacher Education, you begin as a premajor and apply for admission to a cohort. The cohort simply refers to the group of people who take their methods coursework together.
Transfer students who have some very specific requirements met when they come to Miami will be considered for earlier cohorts, on a space-available basis. However, usually spaces in earlier cohorts are only available in Math, Science, and Foreign Language adolescent cohorts. Sometimes, even the math and science cohorts fill up right away.

HOW WILL MY COURSES TRANSFER MIAMI ?
You may encounter the problem of having taken a course on the quarter system and transferring it into our semester system. A 3 quarter hour course transfers here as only 2 semester hours. 4 quarter hours = 2.6 semester hours and 5 quarter hours = 3.3 semester hours. If you are admitted to Miami , you should meet with an advisor after you receive your official transcript evaluation.
To find out how your courses might transfer to Miami , just go to http://miami.transfer.org/

HOW DO I CHANGE MY MAJOR TO
EARLY CHILDHOOD, MIDDLE CHILDHOOD OR ONE OF YOUR ADOLESCENT
LICENSURE PROGRAMS?
The departmental advisor, Phyllis Mendenhall, has appointment sign-up
sheets on the credenza in the outer office area of 404 McGuffey. Just stop by and find
a time slot that fits your schedule.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON'T GET
INTO A COHORT?
Students who do not get into cohorts usually do one of two things: 1. apply for admission to a later cohort or 2. change to another major. Students who are not in a cohort at the end of the sophomore year, usually will choose to look at some other majors that can be finished by the end of four years. Then, they go somewhere to get a master's with licensure to teach. There is more than one route to becoming a teacher. Just because a student didn't get into a cohort does not mean that she/he can never be a teacher. It just means that they might take a detour. Many universities only offer licensure programs at the graduate level. They will only take people who have a degree. Certification and licensure varies from state to state and even varies somewhat from university to university in Ohio .
