Scholarships

School of Education, Health, and Society

Donors have funded more than 140 scholarships for students enrolled in the School of Education, Health and Society.

Most Miami scholarships require documented financial need and most are administered by the Office of Student Financial Assistance, 121 Campus Avenue Building, 529-8757.

However, the Teacher Education Department does administer the THA Foundation Scholarships. The department annually awards several THA scholarships, targeted to non-traditional teacher education majors.

The THA Scholarship is the only departmental scholarship that requires an application. Most other scholarships are awarded based on whether an individual meets requirements established by the donor (typically need, merit, hometown, major, etc.) and do not require a specific application.

Prospective students should also be aware of Miami’s Access Initiative, which is designed to help make a Miami degree accessible to all academically qualified students. Any Ohio resident entering Miami’s Oxford campus as a first-time, full-time freshman in the fall of 2008 will be considered for the scholarship program. Students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by February 15, be eligible for federal aid, and have a total family income equal to or less than $35,000.

THA Foundation Scholarship

This scholarship is renewable and is awarded to full-time Miami University students (typically non-traditional) majoring in either early or middle childhood education. Recipients must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.75 and have documented financial need. Students must demonstrate a high potential for entering and remaining in the elementary education teaching profession. Additionally, by completing this application, potential recipients are making a commitment to teach at the early or middle school grade level, one year for each year of scholarship support.

The THA Foundation was established by Dr. Thomas Haggai in 1963 to provide assistance so young people will be prepared to help the youth of our country. Over the years, the mission of the Foundation has evolved to include support of non-traditional students preparing for careers in early or middle childhood education. The Board of Governors of the THA Foundation recognizes the shortage of qualified teachers, particularly in the areas of early and middle childhood education. In its desire to aid in reducing this crisis, the Foundation is committed to providing scholarship assistance to fund partial or full financial support for tuition, fees, and books.
