The Department of Teacher Education administers three centers:

The Discovery Center

n 1990, Ohio was one of the first ten states to receive funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for a Statewide Systemic Initiative, Discovery, to improve mathematics and science education.  Since 1996, with funding by the Ohio Board of Regents, Discovery has continued to serve as a catalyst to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics and science across Ohio.

Since its founding, Discovery has provided professional development for about 20,000 Ohio mathematics and science teachers and 550 principals and other administrators.

Jane Butler Kahle, Robert & Elizabeth Condit Endowed Professor of Science Education (Emerita), is director. Terry McCollum, Statewide Director for K-12 Programs, is responsible for all Discovery programs and associate professional development activities.

The Heckert Center for Children's Reading and Writing

The Heckert Center was established in 1983 to establish models of literacy excellence and to engage in the study and improvement of children’s reading and writing. Richard and Barbara Heckert, Oxford natives and Miami graduates, endowed the center to honor Richard’s father, John W. Heckert, a Miami professor of education from 1910-1942 and first director of the McGuffey Laboratory School.

Other goals of the Heckert Center are to serve as an information exchange center for the development and dissemination of research in children’s reading and writing.

Director to be named.

Ohio’s Evaluation & Assessment Center

Ohio's Evaluation & Assessment Center for Mathematics and Science Education (E & A Center) is a partnership between Miami University and the University of Cincinnati. Center evaluators have expertise in science and mathematics instruction (preK-20), in qualitative and quantitative evaluation and research; in web-based instruction and assessment, in the refinement and development of measurement instruments; and in translating research and evaluation findings for policy makers as well as the general public.

Jane Butler Kahle, Robert & Elizabeth Condit Endowed Professor of Science Education (Emerita), is director. Debbie Zorn, director of the Evaluation Services Center at the University of Cincinnati, is co-director.
