Graduate Programs

You have several options for graduate programs in the Department of Teacher Education:
Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
The MAT program is designed for students who do not have a teaching license but want to teach.
Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is for you if you:
- Have one or more degrees.
- Wish to obtain a teaching license.
- Have a desire to teach grades 7-12.
- Have a desire to teach English/language arts, mathematics, science, or social studies in grades 7-12.
The Choose Ohio First Scholarship provides funding for prospective and current science and mathematics teachers.
The Department of Teacher Education’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is NOT for you if you:
- Are already a certified or licensed teacher.
- Have a degree and wish to teach elementary grades.
- Have a degree and wish to teach any subject other than English/language arts, mathematics, science, or social studies in grades 7-12.

The MAT is typically a two-and-a-half year program, depending on the content courses you have already completed, when you start the program, and whether or not you take summer courses.
Licensure programs in early and middle childhood are only available at the undergraduate level. If you have a degree and want licensure in early or middle childhood, you must apply as an undergraduate student and take all undergraduate courses.

Once you are accepted into the MAT program you will be assigned a faculty advisor. Make an appointment with your advisor to finalize the plan.
M.Ed programs
M.Ed. programs are designed for the working classroom teacher who wants to take a class or two each semester and summer. Depending on the number of courses taken each term, most teachers complete the M.Ed. in approximately three years.
Master of Education in Elementary Education
Master of Education in Elementary Education is for you if you:
- Have a teaching license or certificate in grades pre-K through 8.

comprehensive (courses in more than one area)
The Master of Education in Elementary Education is NOT for you if you:
- Do not have a teaching license in grades pre-K through 8.
- If you have a teaching license but want to add an elementary license to what you already have.
Master of Education in Elementary Mathematics
Master of Education in Elementary Mathemtics Education is for you if you:
- Have a teaching license or certificate in grades pre-K through 8.
- Wish to earn a master’s degree and take additional courses in mathematics and the pedagogy needed to teach it effectively in the elementary grades.
The Master of Education in Elementary Mathematics Education is NOT for you if you:
- Do not have a teaching license in grades pre-K through 8.
- If you have a teaching license but want to add a mathematics teaching license to what you already have.
Master of Education in Reading
Master of Education in Reading is for you if you:
- Have any teaching license. (This includes licenses in areas such as art, music, health, etc.)
- Want to add a reading endorsement to your license.
Reading Endorsement: This is 18-hour graduate-level endorsement which enables candidates to work as a reading specialist in Ohio schools and communities. Courses required for the endorsement are part of the M.Ed. in reading degree.
Master of Education in Adolescent Education
Master of Education in Adolescent Education is for you if you:
- Have a teaching license for grades 7-12 in English/language arts, social studies, math, or science.
- Want to expand your content knowledge as well as your pedagogical knowledge.
The Choose Ohio First Scholarship provides funding for prospective and current science and mathematics teachers.
Master of Education in Adolescent Education is NOT for you if you:
- Have a degree and want to become a licensed teacher in grades 7-12.
- Are an early or middle childhood teacher wanting to add adolescent licensure.
- Want to pursue your content area only and not your pedagogical knowledge.
Master of Education in Adolescent Mathematics Education
Master of Education in Adolescent Mathematics Education is for you if you:
- Have a teaching license for grades 7-12 in mathematics.
- Want to expand your content knowledge as well as your pedagogical knowledge.
The Choose Ohio First Scholarship provides funding for prospective and current science and mathematics teachers.
Master of Education in Adolescent Mathematics Education is NOT for you if you:
- Have a degree and want to become a licensed teacher in grades 7-12.
- Want to pursue your content area only and not your pedagogical knowledge.
