Dr. Iris Johnson

Thank you for your interest in Miami University’s Department of Teacher Education.

For more than 100 years, we have been preparing effective, transformative educators to make innovative contributions to the education of youth in America and abroad.

Our teacher candidates explore teaching in the United States and around the globe in locations such as Australia, Belize and Europe. Here in the U.S., they also teach on Native American reservations.

While at Miami University, our teacher candidates benefit from a broad range of experiences through teaching English-language learners, students with special needs, and students who live in urban, suburban, and rural areas. One of our more recent programs, the Urban Teaching Cohort, offers students phenomenal opportunities in immersion, service, and teaching in the Over the Rhine community in Cincinnati and in Middletown City Schools.

The quality of our programs and multidisciplinary curriculum are reflected in the accomplishments and professional involvement of our current teacher candidates, faculty, and alumni. Our future teachers receive awards; make presentations at local, state, and national conferences; and travel abroad actively engaged in programs such as Ambassadors for Children.

Through our digital learning initiatives, students harness the power of evolving technologies to nurture new ways of learning—and teaching.

We welcome all of you who wish to make a profound contribution to the betterment of our society through education. Join us, find your niche, and spread your wings!
