The Department of Teacher Education at Miami University is committed to providing dynamic and innovative programs that produce caring, competent, and transformative educators. Our goal is to prepare graduates who will impact student learning in the schools of today and tomorrow, have the tools to serve as agents for positive change, and educte young people for citizenship in a democracy. Central to our work is the creation of knowledge, the preparation of professionals for leaderships in schools and communities, and the provision of service and outreach.
To this end, the Department:
- will be responsible for the preparation, advisement and supervision of prospective teachers of children and youth for graduation, licensure, and service to the schools.
- will be responsible for the continuing education and re-training of teachers of children and youth through graduate programs, courses, and workshops.
- will focus on teaching prospective teachers to implement effective instructional activities in classroom settings and to understand the reasons why some ways of teaching are more effective than others. This goal will be supported by faculty members who practice what they preach, and who are committed to high quality candidate selection, clinical and field experiences, student advising, and instructional supervision.
- will be responsible for improving and extending the theory and practice of teaching and teacher education through research and dissemination activities.
- will be responsible for taking an active role in the community of which the University is a part, by using the knowledge and abilities of its faculty members to contribute to the quality of life for all citizens.
- will create a community of engaged learners who foster the acceptance
and inclusion of difference including race, ethnicity, class,
gender identity, sexual orientation, ability and religion.
