School Districts Search for Teachers to Offer Chinese Language Programs

American school districts are clamoring for teachers to offer Chinese language programs, and Miami University's department of teacher education (EDT) is helping to meet that demand.

Beginning in fall 2008, Miami students may major in Chinese language education. The program is the first such undergraduate licensure program in Ohio. Graduates will be eligible to teach Chinese in grades pre-K through 12.

The program begins with Chinese 101 and will include courses in Mandarin conversation, composition, culture, linguistics, and literature. The major is designed to be completed in four years, including a semester studying abroad in China, and students need not have prior experience speaking Chinese to enroll.

The goal is to meet the need for Chinese teachers in Ohio’s schools as well as provide Miami students with a remarkable opportunity, say program coordinators Martha Castañeda and Paul Lyddon, coordinators of the program and faculty members in EDTphoto of Great Wall of China.
