Miami's EDT grads stay in touch with faculty and staff. Here is some of the news about their careers they've shared.

 

 

Rebecca Breitholle

Rebecca Breitholle, a December 2008 early childhood education major, is teaching second grade in Silver Spring, MD.  "When I interviewed, the principal told me that he was very impressed with the education I received at Miami, and that he felt that I was well prepared to be a teacher. Also, when he called the human resources department, they said that they LOVE to have students who have graduated from Miami apply for teaching jobs there because they are very impressive candidates and are always well prepared. "

Drew Stricker

Drew Stricker has been teaching mathematics in Chicago Public Schools since he graduated from Miami in 2002. He writes about the highs and lows of teaching.

Lisa York

Lisa York, a 2006 teacher education graduate, believes that sometimes you have to do crazy things—like sacrificing your hair--to inspire students.

Dana King

Dana King is principal of Milbrook High School, an urban school with almost 2,500 students in Raleigh, N.C. A 1979 Miami graduate (BS in Education), she appreciates the rigorous courses that were part of the curriculum. She remembers being required to take a computer course.

"Do you realize how bizarre that was in 1979?" she says. "I didn't appreciate the relevance of that experience, but truly appreciate it 30 years later. The world got flat."

 

 

James M. Smith

James M. Smith, who earned his undergraduate degree in elementary education from Miami University in 1979, has been named president of Northern State University, Aberdeen, S.D.

Katerina Kebza Young, who received a master's degree in secondary English education from Miami in 1998, is Head Teacher at the International School in Olomouc in the Czech Republic.

Brian Schultz

Brian Schultz, who got his MAT in 1999, has written “Spectacular Things Happen Along the Way: Lessons from an Urban Classroom,” an account of a year he spent teaching in the infamous Chicago housing project Cabrini Green.
