Teens for Literacy celebrates 20 years

5/6/09

Miami University celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Teens for Literacy Program recently with a luncheon at Shriver Center honoring the student tutors and the teachers who coordinated the program in their buildings.

The program is a partnership between Miami’s teacher education department, three urban schools and one rural school.  The program encourages students to promote literacy in their school communities, exposes students to post-secondary educational options and allows students to consider teaching as a possible career.

The Teens for Literacy students visited Miami April 1 for a Shadowing Day. The visitors “shadowed” an education major by visiting classes and enjoying some of the recreational activities on campus.

This year, students from Alliance Academy, College Hill Fundamental Academy and Dater Montessori, all Cincinnati area, and National Trail Middle School in Preble County participated in Teens for Literacy.

Teachers say the program has a positive impact on the students who are doing the tutoring by increasing self confidence and team skills.

The program was founded by Allen Berger, professor emeritus and Eileen Diamond has been director of the program since he retired in 2006.
