A "sun and service" spring break

3/16/09

This project received media attention.

Eighteen Miami undergraduates have returned from Columbia where they sent spring break week (March 9-13) working on service projects to assist educational efforts in and around Cartagena, a historic city on the Caribbean coast.

The trip, sponsored by Ambassadors for Children (AFC), included visits to schools, hospitals and businesses and working on projects that ranged from painting murals in schools to assisting with the construction of a computer lab.

In addition, the Miami chapter of AFC contributed 26 bags of school supplies, soccer uniforms and more than $500 toward construction of a computer lab.

The AFC visit was featured in Cartagena newspaper and a television broadcast is expected to air in April on the Caracol television network, the largest network serving Central and South Åmerica.

Among Miami faculty and staff accompanying the students were Karen Montgomery, visiting assistant professor in the department of teacher education and AFC advisor; Megan Taylor Kuykendoll, Latino community coordinator for Miami’s Center for American and World Cultures; and Scott Irlbacher, assistant director of the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and Leadership.

A blog features information and photos from the alternative spring break trip.
