Choose Ohio
The Miami Choose Ohio First Undergraduate Scholarships will provide up to $3,000 a year in renewable scholarships for 2010 graduating high school senior interested in becoming
• a teacher of mathematics or science in grades 7-12
• a teacher of mathematics and science in grades 4-9.
How to apply:
Eligibility and requirements:
• Successfully graduate from high school and be admitted to Miami University as a full-time student on the Oxford campus
• Be an Ohio resident
• Participate in all activities, trips, meetings and events sponsored by Miami’s Choose Ohio First teacher preparation program and make progress toward an academic degree.
• Enroll in one of the freshman math-science seminar created for Choose Ohio First scholarships recipients
• Maintain a minimum 2.5 grade-point-average.
- In the spring of their freshman year, students in the Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program must apply and be accepted in one of the following teacher preparation majors in order to continue their scholarship beyond their first year:
• Adolescent Young Adult (grades 7-12) Mathematics
• Adolescent Young Adult (grades 7-12) Science
• Middle Childhood (grades 4-9) Mathematics and Science - Indicate you plan to major in a mathematics or science teaching area. You will automatically be considered for a Choose Ohio First! Scholarship. Students accepted into the program will be notified in March 2010. link to first year admissions
Benefits:
• Earn a Choose Ohio First Scholarship of up to $3,000 a year. This scholarship is automatically renewed for up to four years if participants meet all program requirements.
• Additional scholarships may be available from Miami.
• Qualify for an additional tuition waiver in each of the first three years of your college education to take special mathematics/science seminars as part of the Choose Ohio First program.
•. Students from families with annual incomes of $35,000 or less should apply for the Miami Access Initiative which is designed to make a Miami education accessible to academically qualified students regardless of income.
• Become part of a group of students (cohort) all of whom also will be preparing to teach science and mathematics. You will take courses together, travel to area schools to observe and learn from master teachers, and prepare for your student teaching together. Cohort participants not only provide support to each other, but often become close friends.
• Upon graduation earn an Ohio license to teach in your chosen area. Science and math teachers are among the most sought after teachers.
