New Science and Mathematics Teachers

The Miami Choose Ohio First New Teacher Fellowships will provide variety of support for mathematics and science teachers during their first three years (induction period).  The program is designed to meet the needs of new mathematics and science teachers (high school and middle school). Goal is to improve the retention of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) teachers during the critical first three years of teaching. Nationally, more than 40 percent of new teachers leave the profession during this critical transition period.  

Eligibility:
Degree and Ohio teaching license in:
Middle Childhood Education for Mathematics and Science, or
Adolescent Young Adult Education for a physical science, biological science, or mathematics
• Employed teaching science or mathematics in an Ohio middle school or high school by spring 2010
• Receiving teaching degree in 2008 or 2009 
• Be an Ohio resident

Benefits:
• A full scholarship for a special Teacher Academy designed for up to 40 new mathematics and science teachers to be held at Miami's Voice of America Center from June 14- June 25, 2010.  The academy will provide 3-hours in graduate credit at Miami. The course will focus on misconceptions in mathematics or science and classroom management.
• Up to $1,500 worth of scholarships for content-based graduate courses in mathematics or science to be taken during the summer of 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Miami’s TEAM Scholarship, which provides a 50 percent reduction in tuition and fees for Ohio teachers, can be combined with the Choose Ohio First Scholarship to make your graduate courses even more affordable.

Requirements:
Enroll in Teacher Academy in Summer 2010, a special program that will provide information on such topics as managing the mathematics/science class, students’ misconceptions about mathematics or science and inquiry based learning.
• Participate in an online learning community during the fall 2010.
• Maintain a minimum 3.0 grade-point-average.
