Miami President David Hodge has named Tom Romano, professor of teacher education, as one of two inaugural Naus Family Faculty Scholars.
The program, funded by a $250,000 gift to Miami’s For Love and Honor Campaign by James and Susan Naus, both class of ’67, supports faculty who exemplify the very best of Miami’s traditions, said Hodge. The couple attribute the success they and their daughters Anne '93 and Lynne '95 have had to the close relationships they built with faculty during their times at Miami.

During his three-year appointment as a Naus Family Faculty Scholar, Romano will receive additional funding for professional expenses and salary enhancement.
“This is an outstanding honor not only for Tom and the Department of Teacher Education, but for the entire School of Education, Health and Society,” said Carine Feyten, EHS dean.
Romano, a 1971Miami graduate, has taught English methods and writing at Miami since 1995 and taught high school students for 17 years before that. He is nationally known for his efforts to enhance the teaching of writing and is the author of five books and numerous articles, poems, chapters, and book reviews about teaching English and writing.
His many awards for teaching include the Richard T. Delp Outstanding Faculty Award from the School of Education, Health and Society and the Alumni Association's Effective Educator Award in 2007.
