First students in new reading program graduate
12/09/08
Kendall Wright and Chad Thatcher are the first two students in Miami’s newly redesigned master’s reading program to graduate. They are completing the program in time for Miami’s Dec. 19 commencement.
Both students have accepted teaching jobs. Wright will be a 7th grade English/language arts at Hopewell Junior School in the Lakota School District. Thatcher will be teaching language arts at Loudonville High School.
Faculty involved in the master’s program pride themselves on having established a pragmatic, performance-based assessment framework that is informed by key principles and best practices, said Paula Saine, associate professor of teacher education and coordinator of Miami’s graduate reading program.
Faculty within the graduate reading program agree that candidates must have strong knowledge of reading and its instruction if they are to teach it well to students in authentic and diverse settings.
Program candidates have opportunities to develop and improve, such knowledge through an extensive set of core or foundational courses focusing on language, literacy, and culture and to apply such knowledge in pedagogical courses and clinical or field experience.
