KNH faculty, students recognized at conference

Helaine Alessio, chair of Miami University’s kinesiology and health department, received the Founders Award at the recent meeting of the Midwest Regional Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine.
One individual is chosen each year to receive the award in recognition of outstanding service to the regional chapter.
In addition, junior exercise science major Hayden Ansinelli received an award for the best undergraduate research poster for her presentation on “A Structured Pediatric Rehabilitation Exercise Program Results in Increased Physical Activity and Fitness for Single Ventricle Children.” The award included a check for $150.
Miami students presented 10 poster sessions and one oral session at the meeting, which was held Oct. 16-17 in St. Charles, Ill.
Professors Jeffrey Potteiger, Randy Claytor, Mark Walsh, Brett Massie, and Ron Cox served as mentors for undergraduate students: Andy Haley, Katie Heim, Ryan Gallagher, Jennifer Paulus, Kelsie Bernholtz, Brennan McGill, Lindsay Cary, Rachel Funk, Christopher. Reed, Gary Steffes, Jeff Hart, Hayden Ansinelli, and graduate/former graduate students: Adam Strang, Mathias Hieronymus, Josh Haworth, Chris Ohlinger, Rachel Funk, Sara Waits, Brittany Caserta, Nicole Blaize, Jacob Omolew and Brandon Kistler.
There was standing room only at a special symposium on “Health Implications of Excessive Weight Gain in Football Athletes” co-presented by Professors Potteiger, Claytor and Massie.
In a separate, informal competition that used a Jeopardy-like game format, Miami, represented by Nicole Blaize, Kali Noonen, and Matt Jolley, earned third place honors out of 15 schools.
