A program initiated by Miami alumnus Walter M. Kimbrough to improve graduation rates among black men at Philander Smith College, a historically black institution in Little Rock, Arkansas, was featured recently in the publication Inside Higher Ed.

Kimbrough, who received a master’s from the College Student Personnel program in 1991, has been president of the college since 2004. His Black Male Initiative is a low-budget, institution-wide program aimed at personally reaching black men on the campus.

It is based on research indicating that African-American men benefit from a supportive environment and a sense of community.
