James Shiveley, chair of Miami University’s teacher education department, has been named the Charles and Frances Condit Endowed Professor by Miami President David Hodge.
“Dr. Shiveley’s accomplishments as a teacher and a scholar represent the best of Miami’s traditions,” said Carine Feyten, dean of the School of Education, Health and Society (EHS). “As Condit Professor, Jim will be providing leadership and momentum to our efforts to better prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.”
Shiveley’s background as a high school teacher, a professor and university administrator give him the knowledge and experience to promote meaningful educational change, said Feyten.
President Hodge has set the following goals for the Condit Professor:
• Facilitate interdisciplinary work within EHS
• Internationalize the curriculum in EHS
• Enhance partnerships with schools
• Explore an EHS honors program.
Shiveley, who joined Miami’s faculty in 1994, has focused his teaching, research and service activities on citizenship education for a democratic society, the development of school/university partnerships and attributes of effective teacher education programs. He received his undergraduate degree and a master’s degree from Miami and his doctorate from Ohio State University.
He has received several awards for teaching, has published numerous books and scholarly articles, and has served as a consultant to the Ohio Department of Education and to schools throughout the state. He has also acted as the principal investigator for over $500,000 in grants to implement a pilot on mentoring entry-year teachers in southwest Ohio.
The late Charles and Frances Condit funded the professorship, which provides additional salary and support for professional expenses. Charles Condit received his A.B. degree in 1932 and his master’s in 1940, both from Miami, and was a high school teacher and business executive in Urbana, Ill.
