About 480 graduates were honored at the recognition ceremony held by Miami University's School of Education, Health and Society Sunday, May 10.

Commencement speaker was Katie Shipman, a special education major, who plans to volunteer with the Peace Corps next year.

While at Miami, she tutored students in Hamilton learning English, studied abroad in Seville, Spain and student taught in inner city Cincinnati, where she also lived.

In her commencement speech she talked about growing up in northeastern Ohio and how student teaching in an urban area and living in Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine area changed her view of the world.  Read the speech.
