Our Partnership with Living Waters

School of Education, Health, and Society

Miami’s partnership with a program in nearby Hamilton, Ohio that provides after-school homework and tutoring to about 100 low income, mostly Hispanic youngsters is a collaboration that works.

The affiliation provides "a wealth of knowledge and valuable resources that not only benefit us as an agency, but the many children we serve each year," says Cathy Hester, executive director, Hamilton Living Waters Ministry, Inc.

But the youngsters are not the only beneficiaries. Almost every student in Miami's specialist's level program in school psychology volunteers at Living Waters. They provide a wide variety of academic support services, including:

  • Evaluating the students' individual progress and the success of various intervention programs
  • Assisting with the design and implementation of learning and intervention activities
  • Consulting with staff and tutors, many of whom are Miami undergraduates and part of the America Reads program.

"Our specialist level students are doing all the things at Living Waters that they will need to be doing as a professional school psychologist. It's a great first experience for them," says Dr. Ray Witte, director of the school psychology program. Living Waters also allows Miami students to work with students for whom English is not their native language, a growing portion of the school population.
