The Curriculum and Teacher Leadership (CTL) M.Ed. program upholds a broad conception of leadership as a school-
based activity grounded in principles of social justice, critical literacy and
community building as taken on by teachers in formal and informal leadership roles
in their classrooms, schools, and communities. The program is guided by a
conception of teacher leadership that encourages and develops the potential of
teachers as curriculum-makers in their classrooms, action researchers, and as critical
decision-makers across school and community environments. The flexible yet focused program consists of 30 hours
of coursework in the areas of curriculum, social foundations of education,
 leadership, and research.

The program reflects a commitment to preparing educators to
think critically about current school practices, to explore the links between
schooling and culture, and to develop methods of transforming schools with a
guiding ethic of social justice and equity.

The program is designed to meet the needs of a diverse group of educators,
including students interested in continuing in a doctoral program in educational
studies, K-12 teachers who are interested in furthering and enlivening their own
teaching by taking classes together, licensed pre-service teachers just graduated
from undergraduate programs, and teaching professionals who work in educational
programs in the community and agencies.

Program Requirements

CTL students take 30 credit hours. This includes seven courses in the EDL Department: three core courses in curriculum, a sequence of two courses in research, and one course each from a menu of options in leadership and the social foundations of education.

Sequencing of Coursework

EDL 639, Curriculum Theory, is recommended as the introductory course. Students should take all their curriculum courses early in the program. The research courses (EDL 648 and EDL 649) should be taken in a sequence, back-to-back, with EDL 648 in
the fall, and EDL 649 immediately following in the spring.

Concentration

The 9-credit concentration is a series of coursework identified by the student in consultation with the student's advisor
that follows a particular topical content area or theme. Students are strongly recommended to
take at least a minimum number of courses (500, 600 or 700 level) outside of EDL in order to broaden their understanding of other educational topics and perspectives.

Possible concentrations include: social studies, multicultural education, reading, special education, women's studies,
social foundations of education, educational policy and law, educational psychology, and students with exceptional
needs.

Concentrations can lead to licensure in curriculum and instruction and professional development, a graduate certificate in women’s studies, and state designation as a Highly Qualified Teacher.
