Educational Leadership

Chair's Welcome

Kate RousmaniereWelcome to the Department of Educational Leadership, where we prepare students to develop educational practices and communities that are committed to equity, social justice and the forging of collaborative links between communities. Our interest is in the study of educational change and leadership across educational organizational systems and processes. Faculty and students across the Department share a common interest in linking research and practice, in the intellectual study of culture, and in social change.

EDL is primarily a graduate department, offering two masters degree programs in K-12 educational leadership, one masters degree in College Student Personnel, two doctoral degrees in K-12 leadership and, beginning in Fall, 2009, a Ph.D. in Student Affairs. We also offer three K-12 administrative licensure programs. Our work is primarily based in the content area of K-12 schooling and higher education, viewed through different cultural and theoretical lenses including critical race theory, feminist studies, organizational and leadership theory, and the anthropology, sociology, philosophy and history of education. All of our programs are grounded in a strong qualitative and quantitative research base.

Our graduate students come with diverse backgrounds and interests and follow professional paths including administrative positions as college president or school superintendent, career advisor, school founder, teacher leader or supervisor, or college professor. Many of our students come to us as part of a life or career change, or to follow an intellectual interest more deeply. Recent students in EDL have developed research interests in such topics as youth culture and educational practice, math and science education, women in educational leadership, African American spirituality in education, school community partnerships, and service learning and civic activism.

We also offer undergraduate coursework in the social foundations of education and teacher leadership, and a thematic sequence in cultural studies. We sponsor a number of courses housed in the Division of Student Affairs in the areas of leadership, service learning, career development, and higher education.
