Windate Writing Center

The Ida Montimer Windate Writing Center

Writing is an integral part of the academic and personal lives of Western's students yet it is not always an easy process for anyone, even the most proficient of writers. The Windate Writing Center is a place for individual and small-group instruction where you can come, either voluntarily or on referral, to discuss and learn how best to meet requirements-including those you set and those set for you-with any kind of writing you must do or wish to do during your years at Western.

Whether you have an essay, lab report, research paper, poem, short story, resume or letter to compose, the Writing Center wants to help. Its staff consists of undergraduate students who are good writers and friendly critics and who are eager to assist you in improving your writing. They are trained to offer you help with the process of writing, from finding or refining ideas to the skills of revision and editing.

You may visit the center regularly or sporadically to meet your specific, general, immediate or long-range goals. Simply sign up for an appointment on the Writing Center door or drop by during our open hours. The Writing Center is a place where you can write and talk with others about writing, where peer tutors who write and think about writing are waiting to talk with you.

Just what can you expect from the Writing Center? It's

  • NOT a "we write it for you" arrangement;
  • NOT a proofreading, correcting service;
  • NOT always a guarantee of better grades;
  • NOT a 30-minute miracle cure;
  • NOT a grading service.

Instead, it is a place committed to:

  • assisting all ranges of writers;
  • beginning where you are;
  • teaching writing as a process;
  • helping you to improve your own work;
  • providing you with a safe and friendly place to visit and receive constructive and honest feedback on your writing.

To Help Us Help You . . .

  1. Come to the center with as much information about your writing as you can muster. If applicable, bring assignment sheet, relevant handouts, earlier papers and instructor comments. If you have any questions about the assignment, consult with your professor beforehand.
  2. Don't wait until the last minute. Bring your working draft in early enough to allow ample time to revise and edit your work.
  3. Don't settle for "I left the Center more confused than when I went in." Please speak up! Tell us if there's a problem.
  4. Feel free to change tutors if your visit is not productive for you. Each tutor has different strengths to offer. Find one who suits your individual needs.
  5. Give your writing and your center visit your most diligent efforts and your best attitude. We promise to do the same!
