ELLEN PRICE SHORT WRITING ASSIGNMENT FOR STUDENTS Ellen Price Art 341, Art 441 Intermediate and Advanced Printmaking Fall 2004 "COMRADES IN ART" Due: One week from assignment Length: One page type written 10 points The purpose of this reflective writing assignment is to gain perspective on our studio work, especially in relation to contemporary visual artists (last 15 years) and broaden our creative options. Review contemporary art periodicals at Wertz Art and Architecture Library such as Art in America, Flash Art, Art News, Art on Paper, and New Art Examiner, dating from 1989 to the present. Review a generous range of articles, I suggest at least thirty, the search and discovery is central to the project. Please keep a record of which publications and what years you browsed through on the library stacks. Select an artist through whose body of work has relevance for your own development. What is defined as relevance? The relevant aspect could be type of imagery or treatment of formal elements such line, color or shape. Or, the artist may be engaging a subject that you would like to investigate. The artist does not have to work in print media. Most important is your personal reaction to the work. Select work that is compelling, fascinating and engaging and be prepared to explain how the artist is significant for you at this time. Can't decide between two artists? Write about them both. Write a one-page statement accompanied by the photocopied article that reflects on why the chosen works are engaging and how it is significant to your current artwork or artwork you would like to accomplish. The tone of the paper may be informal; think of the tone you would adopt in a letter to friend, although complete sentences, spelling and "readibility" count. Try reading your letter/reflection aloud to check for "readiblilty" and flow. My grading criteria Is there a clear statement of how the artist is important to your artwork? Is your attraction to the artists work convincing? Background research- how many and which publications? (your list)Is the writing free from spelling or grammatical errors? |
