Research Opportunities
We are pleased to provide others with an opportunity to participate in our research program.
Undergraduate Student Research
Our laboratory is strongly
committed to collaborating with undergraduate students in inquiry-based
research. We participate in the Miami University/Howard Hughes Medical
Institute Undergraduate Research Internship Program, the Miami University
Undergraduate
Summer Scholars Program, and the Dean’s
Scholars Program. We also promote mentored independent and collaborative
research in areas that further the laboratory’s mission. Virtually
all of our undergraduate researchers pursue advanced academic, veterinary,
or medical degrees.
We invite queries from highly-motivated, accomplished students who
are within the formative stages of their academic training.
Graduate Assistantships
We offer Graduate Assistantships
leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. in Zoology at Miami University, Oxford,
Ohio. Students admitted to either program receive a full tuition
waiver, teaching experience (including lecture courses for doctoral
candidates), and a competitive stipend. Our mentoring focus is on
preparing students for a successful research-oriented, academic
career.
General admission requirements are established by the Graduate
School, with specific program
requirements set by the Department of Zoology. Successful
applicants to our research program generally have strong writing
skills, a solid work ethic, strong technical writing skills, and
a broad academic foundation including courses such as physics, organic
chemistry (or biochemistry), genetics, animal physiology, ecology,
and statistics. In certain cases, deficiencies may be remedied after
enrollment.
Miami University is a state-supported
institution with an enrollment of 16,000 students, including 1,000
in graduate programs. Founded in 1809, Miami University is located
in southwestern Ohio, 35 miles north of Cincinnati and 45 miles
southwest of Dayton. The Department
of Zoology supports 34 faculty, more than 60 graduate students,
and approximately 1,000 undergraduate majors.
Assistantships are often available to qualified students.
Postdoctoral Scholarships
Postdoctoral
scholars supported by our laboratory are integral to advancing our
research program. Such positions become available from time to time,
depending upon funding and the current needs of the laboratory.
We invite queries from accomplished scholars who share our research
interests.
