The Expeditions
In early 2005, 2006, and 2007, five-person teams traveled to Palmer Station on the Antarctic Peninsula. Their goal? To study the largest free-living, entirely terrestrial animal in the Antarctic: a wingless midge named Belgica antarctica. This website contains:
- journal entries from the researchers;
- video clips of seals, penguins, and other Antarctic wildlife;
- descriptions and photos of some of the islands around Palmer Station;
- Standards-based lesson plans for K-12 classrooms;
- a summary of what the research team learned each year;
- and much more!
