January 28, 2006 - Palmer Station, Antarctica

!Diversión Antártica! Anoche se nos olvido decirle a Marianne que saldríamos hoy a las 0900 horas y por lo tanto ella no estaba lista y la tuvimos que dejar atrás. Como el sábado en la tarde se le dedica a la base teníamos que aprovechar de la mañana. Fuimos nuevamente a Humble para terminar de colectar todas las garrapatas que Josh necesitaba. En menos de una hora terminamos y le dimos la vuelta a Humble, a Litchfield y a varios icebergs gigantescos pues estamos en la búsqueda del Bahía Paraíso nuevamente. Pues hoy la hallamos y aquí esta. Por la tarde nos percatamos que también la podíamos ver desde la estación.

Boys’ day out! We neglected to tell Marianne that we were going out at 0900 hrs and she was not ready, so we left without her. Since Saturday afternoons are dedicated to station clean up we had to take advantage of the morning time. We went to Humble again to collect the much-needed ticks we did not get two days ago. We were very successful and in less than an hour we were moving onwards with our morning. We swung behind Humble, past Litchfield, and towards DeLaca Island. We were still in our quest to find the Bahia Paraiso (which ironically means paradise bay in Spanish). And find her we did. Later in the day, we could see her from the station as well.

Después de tomar varias fotos mientras las olas batían el zodiac, nos dirigimos a Stepping Stones. Aquí buscábamos los ácaros rojos que hemos visto antes pues Josh necesitaba varios cientos para sus experimentos de hidratación y deshidratación. Conseguimos bastantes y cuando se aproximo la hora del almuerzo nos fuimos pues ninguno estaba listo para perderse una comida. En este isla hay muchos Giant Petrels y los polluelos habían salido del cascaron y vimos a los padres dándole de comer.

After snapping several pictures we headed out to Stepping Stones. Here we were looking for the big red mites. We gathered as many we could right up until lunchtime and then headed back to the station. On this island, which is full of giant petrels, the chicks had hatched and we saw several baby petrels and their parents feeding them.

Llegamos a la estación justo a tiempo para comer. El resto del día fue dedicado a la estación como es costumbre. A las 1400 horas tuvimos nuestra ultimo house mouse pues nos vamos el domingo que viene. Hoy me toco limpiar el baño de las mujeres de GWR con la asistencia de Heidi, la persona a cargo de logística. Nos tomo como treinta minutos limpiar el baño y después baje al lab para organizar mis fotos. Resulta que en este mes que llevamos fuera de Ohio, he tomado alrededor de dos giga bites en fotos (~2000) y casi tres giga bites en video digital. Tuve que usar tres CD-Rs para poder guardar las fotos pero hoy nada mas tome un adicional 500 mega bites en fotos. Después del eso fue al gym y a la tienda de la estación que habré los miércoles y sábados de 1600 a 1700. Compre los últimos regalos que necesitaba y me compre una chaqueta de lana para mí.

We came back to the station just in time to enjoy lunch. After that, the rest of the day was dedicated to the station. At 1400 hrs we had our last official house mouse, since we are leaving next weekend. Today I had to share cleaning the women’s bathroom of GWR with Heidi, the logistic person who can be seen driving the ATV on the journal entry from January 24. In less than thirty minutes we got the job done and I came back to the lab to organize my pictures. Today is exactly one month since we left Columbus and I have gathered more than two gigabytes in pictures and an additional three gigabytes in digital video. I was impressed to learn this, but was even more impressed by the fact that I shot 500 megabytes of pictures today alone, after backing up everything else into three CD-Rs. After the station meeting, I went by the station store which opens Wednesdays and Saturdays from 1600 to 1700 hrs. I bought the last of the souvenirs and a nice Antarctic fleece top for myself.

Después de la cena hoy tuvimos un festival de arte en la sala. Durante las pasadas semanas entre las 1000 y 1400 horas los domingos, los residentes de la base han estado creando arte con el propósito de compartirlo hoy. La actividad fue bien divertida y los participantes presentaron de todo desde dibujos, pinturas, prendas, esculturas en metal y madera, ropa, improvisaciones, hasta actuaciones, canto y música instrumental. Yo participe con un grupo de fotos de insectos y mamíferos. Mis dos piezas favoritas las ven aquí. La primera es obvio porque me gusta; es un trazado de los cuatro artrópodos en los que trabajo aquí.

After dinner tonight we had an art show. For weeks now on Sundays from 1000 to 1400 hrs, people have been gathering together in the lounge and engaging in art projects with the goal of a station-wide show. It was a lot of fun and we had the chance to see the talented side of the people here. The displays range from drawing, painting, jewelry, metalwork, carpentry, sewing, photography, writing, instrument playing, acting, improvisations, and singing. Here you can see two of my favorite pieces. The first one needs no explanation, as it is a tracing of four of the arthropods we worked on while down here. It was done by Kerry, the administrative coordinator.

La segunda me gusta más por el marco que el dibujo. Ese marco esta hecho de madera del Hero. El Hero es la embarcación en la cual el Dr. Rick Lee viajo a la Antártica en el 1980 y 1981. Por lo tanto esa pieza es bien especial para mucha gente en la base.

The second piece is a drawing by Zee, the shop supervisor. What is special about the drawing is that the frame that holds it was built from wood from the Hero. The Hero was the ship that Dr. Rick Lee traveled on when he came to Palmer Station in 1980 and 1981. So naturally, this piece is very special to lots of people around here.

Después de tanto esperar y tener un record de 3 de 23 atardeceres sin nubes, hoy tuvimos la oportunidad de disfrutar del más impresionante aun.

After a losing battle of 3 nice sunsets in 23 days, tonight we were vindicated and rewarded with our fourth and most impressive sunset of the season.
