January 20, 2006 - Palmer Station, Antarctica
| Empezamos el día en el laboratorio. Hoy esperábamos tener un día bien ocupado
en la estación pues vendrían dos embarcaciones. Por la mañana llego el Spirit of Sydney y su tripulación
de ocho personas vinieron a la base en un zodiac pequeñito. |

We started out this morning doing some lab science. Today was scheduled to be a busy
day because two ships were expected. In the morning, the Spirit of Sidney arrived and they made their
way from the boat to the station in a very small, baby Zodiac. |

| A las 1100 horas tuvimos una tele conferencia con Dr. Denlinger en Columbus.
Fue un poco extraño hablar por teléfono con el después de varias semanas sin comunicación oral. Yo usualmente
hablo con el todos los días y desde que ingrese a su laboratorio nunca hemos tenido un periodo sin comunicaron,
hasta ahora. Hablamos acerca de nuestros planes de trabajo de investigación, los realistas y los poco
realistas. A la hora del almuerzo compartimos con los Australianos. |

At 1100 hrs we had a telephone conference with Dr. Denlinger. It
was sort of strange hearing Dr. D’s voice after several weeks. I usually talk to him everyday and this
is the first time since I joined his lab group that we have not spoken for so long. We talked about research
goals — the
realistic and the somewhat optimistic. We chatted right up until lunch time and headed down the hall
into the galley. The Australians from the new ship joined us for lunch. |
| Después del almuerzo, podíamos ver en el horizonte que una embarcación de
acercaba a la estación. Era el Clipper Adventurer y trajo casi 100 turistas a la estación. |

Soon after lunch, we could see a ship in the background approaching the station while
dodging icebergs. It was the Clipper Adventurer and it brought almost 100 passengers to the station. |

| En el caos de todo esto, decidimos ir a Cormorant a buscar más larvas. En
tiempo record encontramos miles de larvas y tan rápido como salimos volvemos. El viaje solo tomo como
hora y media y considerando que Cormorant esta a tres millas de la estación y toma como 20 minutos llegar,
avanzamos bastante. |

In the chaos of the passengers arriving in Zodiacs, we headed out to Cormorant Island
or as we now call it, Midge Central. In record time we found thousands of larvae and less than an hour
and a half after leaving we were back at the station. It takes about 20 minutes to make it out there
because it is almost three miles away, so you can imagine how fast and successfully we collected. |
| Una vez en la estación empezamos a sortear nuestras muestras y en menos de
una hora tenemos más de 800 larvas para el experimento de Mike. Como siempre, colectamos varias bolsas
plásticas llenas de tierra con larvas. Hoy colectamos cinco o seis pero usualmente son diez. Las 800
larvas que conseguimos fueron de solo la mitad de una de esas bolsas. Así que el día de hoy fue increíblemente
productivo. |

Once on-station we started sorting and in less than an hour Mike had the 800 plus larvae
that he needed to set up an experiment. We collected several bags in the field like we usually do, maybe
five or six today (normally it is closer to ten). We went through half of one bag to get those 800 and
probably about 300 more that now sit in the fridge, so our day was incredibly productive. |
| Mientras trabajamos tuvimos una visita del sistematista de caculos el Dr.
David Kavanaugh de la Academia de las Ciencias de California. El estaba viajando en el Clipper Adventurer
y quería ver lo que hacíamos aquí con los insectos locales. Inmediatamente empezamos a hablar acerca
del caculo bien raro que vi en Punta Arenas y de nuestro amigo mutuo el Dr. John Wenzel que trabaja en
OSU. También hablamos acerca del sistematista de caculos Dr. Charles Triplehorn el cual es el curador
amerites de los caculos en la colección de insectos que lleva su nombre en OSU. |

While doing this we were visited by fellow entomologist and beetle systematist, Dr. David
Kavanaugh from the California Academy of Sciences. He was traveling aboard the Clipper Adventurer and
wanted to see some bugs and some entomologists. We immediately got to talking about that weird beetle
I saw in Chile and we talked about our mutual friend and professor at OSU, Dr. John Wenzel. We also talked
about Dr. Charles Triplehorn, who is the curator emeritus of the beetles in the insect collection that
now bears his name at OSU. |
| ¿Por supuesto que día estaría completo sin un resumen de los icebergs y las
focas elefantes? Si miran a este iceberg, además del túnel, pueden ver que tiene una proyección que parece
una chorrera de piscina. |

What day would be complete without a cool iceberg picture and the update on the elephant
seal by the lab? If you look at this iceberg, besides the cool tunnel, it seems to have a ridge that
looks like a slide. |

| Todos lo mirábamos y entreteníamos la idea de poder usar la chorrera de hielo.
La foca que lleva varios días frente al lab decidió treparse al balcón hoy y bloquear la puerta. Lamentablemente
eso crea un problema de seguridad para nosotros y por lo tanto el personal de la base tuvo que lentamente
y con seguridad asustar la foca para que se bajara del balcón y se fuera al océano. Por el tratado Antártico
y el acta de conservación Antártica, el abuso o esplotamiento de la vida silvestre no es permitido pero
de vez en cuando hay que interferir pues la seguridad de nosotros y de ellos se pone en riesgo. |

We were all tempted with the possibility of sliding down (and when I say we, I mean all
of the 45 people on station). Our seal today decided that it was time to join in the lab science and
climbed the deck and headed for the door. Unfortunately, this became a safety issue for the base personnel.
So slowly and safely, the seal was persuaded to return to the water. Because of the Antarctic Treaty
and the consequent Conservation Act, wildlife is not to be bothered or harassed but every so often exceptions
due to safety of both the animal and humans have to be made. |

| La noche viene rápido y mi cuerpo esta cansado. Espero el día de mañana con
ansiedad pero el cuerpo me pide cama. |

The evening comes fast and the body is weary. I look forward to tomorrow but yearn for
sleep. |

January 21, 2006 - Palmer Station, Antarctica
| Los sábados en la estación el tiempo es dedicado a la limpieza de la estación.
Por la mañana trabajamos un poco sorteando larvas de nuestras muestras de Cormorant. Después del almuerzo
empezamos las reuniones a las 1345 con nuestra reunión acerca de los procedimientos para dejar la estación.
Aunque faltan dos semanas tenemos que empezar la papelería ahora. En verdad estoy emocionado de virar
para casa y empezar trabajando en el lab. Pero hay gente aquí que se sienten tristes. Eso yo no lo entiendo
pues siempre hemos sabido que era un mes lo que pasaríamos aquí. |

Saturdays at the station are pretty much dedicated to station maintenance.
In the morning we sorted some more of those Cormorant samples. After lunch we started with meetings and
duties at 1345, when we had our redeployment meeting. We already need to start the paperwork for our
departure, which is in two weeks. I am not sad that we are leaving at all, although other people feel
that way. The whole sadness factor I do not understand. We knew this trip would be only for a month;
we knew that more than a year ago. So why would I feel sad? |
| Las primeras dos semanas han sido bien productivas y no concibo que las últimas
dos no sean iguales o mejor. Últimamente el tiempo ha sido el factor que no nos ha dejado salir tan a
menudo como la primera semana pero tenemos fe en que eso cambiara pronto. Lo único que a veces me ayuda
a seguir adelante es el pensar en ver a mi esposa en tres semanas. |

We have had a very productive two weeks and cannot foresee the next
two not being equally fruitful. Lately weather conditions have kept us inside, but we trust that will
change soon. I am eager to get back home for a variety of reasons, but primarily because of my wife (and
secondarily because of some northern blot analysis that await me in the lab). |
| Por la tarde tuvimos nuestra usual tarea del House Mouse. Hoy me toco limpiar
el primer piso del otro edificio. Mayormente es un almacén de materiales y la tienda de la estación.
La oficial de Logística, Rebecca, fue mi compañera de HM y lo limpiamos todo en menos de 20 minutos.
Tuvimos la reunión de la estación y después Josh y yo nos fuimos al gym desde las 1600 a las 1815. Hoy
había una fiesta en la estación y la cena fue una combinación de muchas pizzas. Tuvimos un numero record
de visitantes esta semana y todavía teníamos varios así que invitamos a los Americanos del Onora, los
Australianos del Spirit of Sydney y a los Canadienses Franceses del Sedna IV para la fiesta. La pasamos
muy bien. |

In the afternoon we did the usual House Mouse. Today was my turn to clean the warehouse
and the station store. The Logistics Officer, Rebecca, was my HM buddy and we got our task done in about
20 minutes. After that we had the staff meeting which was also very short. Josh and I hit the gym from
1600 to 1815 and then joined in the big dinner celebration. Because of all the visitors we have had and
currently have we had a big pizza dinner party, for which we had to add tables to the dining area. We
invited the Americans from the Onora, the Australians from the Spirit of Sydney, and the French Canadians
from the Sedna IV. It was a nice meal. |

January 22, 2006 - Palmer Station, Antarctica
| Los domingos fueron creados para descansar y por lo tanto eso fue lo que
hice hoy. Como habían viendo de 40 nudos (~47 MPH) no pudimos salir en los zodiacs. Esto nos afecto mas
personalmente que científicamente pues queríamos ir a Cormorant a terminar nuestra película. El sábado
hay un Art Show y nosotros decidimos hacer una película como nuestra contribución. Ya tenemos más del
50% del contenido pero nos falta un poco. |

Sundays were made for R & R and I was glad that today we got
just that. Due to 40-knot winds (~ 47 MPH), we could not go out in the Zodiacs. This actually puts a
damper on our personal activities, because we were planning going to Cormorant and finishing our film.
Next Saturday is the Art Show at Palmer and the guys and I were planning on making a film for the show.
We have about 50% of it done but needed to go out and get some fill-in footage. |
| Pase la mañana en la cama tratando de dormir y recuperar los sueños viejos
pero eso no lo logre así que a las 1200 horas me levante y baje al lab para sortear larvas por par de
horas. Después de eso hable con mi abuela, mi papá, mi hermana, mi padrino y mi esposa. Hice la planilla
y la trate de someter vía la red pero había mucho trafico. Cuantas personas pueden decir que hacen su
planilla en Antarctica? |

I spent the morning in bed trying to sleep but could not, so around 1200 hrs I came down
and we sorted larvae for a few hours. Afterwards I spoke to my grandma, my dad, my sister, my godfather
and my wife. I also did my taxes but could not get them submitted due to high online traffic. How many
people can say they do their taxes in Antarctica? |

January 23, 2006 - Palmer Station, Antarctica
| La tormenta de anoche hizo un poco de daño alrededor de la base. Mucha gente
no pudieron dormir porque los vientos eran muy fuertes y hacían que los edificios vibraran. Mike había
decidido dormir en una caseta detrás de la estación pero de madrugada no podía dormir y decidió entrar
al dormitorio. Uno de los vagones de carga que tenemos en el muelle se callo y quedo pillado entre otros
dos. Lamentablemente cayó encima de la escalera que se usa para montarse y bajarse del Gould y la rompió.
Toby y Steve sacaron todos los zodiacs del agua pues hacia mucho viento para salir y estaban chocando
contra las piedras. |

Last night's storm did a bit of damage to the station. Many people could not sleep due
to the high winds and the shaking of the buildings. Mike was spending the night in a tent but had to
come in as the wind would not allow any sleep. One of the mill vans by the pier fell off and is currently
propped up between the other two. Unfortunately, it is slowly crushing the gangway that we use to get
on the Gould. Toby and Steve got all the Zodiacs out of the water because it is too windy to go out and
the boats were banging against the rocks. |

| Ya que no podíamos salir tratamos de buscar algo que hacer y empezamos un
experimento para probar los límites de temperatura de Belgica. El día pasó bien lento y estuvo muy aburrido.
Como un niño a la hora de la merienda, yo ansiosamente esperaba el almuerzo pues eso sanaría mi día.
Sin embargo el almuerzo lo hizo peor pues comimos una combinación de las sobras de los almuerzos anteriores.
Usualmente eso no me molesta pero ayer comí sobras para desayuno, almuerzo y comida. Para remediar el
día me fui un rato al gym pues eso siempre me ayuda. A la de la cena me emocionaba el pretexto de algo
nuevo y lo fue pero era algo que no podía comer y el mero olor me daba nauseas. Así que decidí retirarme
a mi cuarto y leer un rato con la esperanza de poner el día detrás de mí. |

So we tried to make the best of it and we started some temperature limit experiments
on Belgica. The day was really slow and boring. Like a kid at a candy store I waited for lunch to remedy
my day, but instead it made it worse. Lunch was a handful of leftovers. Usually I would welcome, that
but yesterday I ate leftovers for all three meals; so for me this was more of the same. Still, I decided
to go work out for a while and enjoy dinnertime. Dinnertime was just as bad. I will not go into the details,
but let me tell you that I could not eat a single thing that was cooked for dinner and the simple smell
of it made me nauseous. So I retired to my room for a while to read and put this awful day behind me. |
| Parece que mañana sea un poco similar pues la cantidad de hielo flotando
en el agua que entro a nuestra había es demasiado de mucho para poder salir. Algo que aprendí hoy es
que un día desperdiciado en la Antártica se siente como una semana en cualquier otro sitio. |
|
It looks like tomorrow might be similar since the amount of brash ice coming into our
harbor may not allow us to get out tomorrow either. I learned today that a day wasted in the Antarctic
feels like a week lost anywhere else. |
