January 18-19, 2006 — Palmer Station, Antarctica
Today is about the half-way mark of this expedition. Time has been flying by because I have been so busy, but I also feel great because we have accomplished so much in such a short period of time. This has also been a time for me to not only look ahead and plan what needs to be accomplished, but to recognize where we have been. I feel that it’s important to respect the past, live enjoying in the present, while setting goals for the future.
Today I received a photo of my students back in Avon Lake, Ohio that was e-mailed to me and I really miss them! I put the picture in my room next to my family photos. I keep looking at their faces wondering how they are doing, what's going on in their lives, and when I'll see them next. I haven’t been able to keep up with their e-mails but did have the opportunity to call each of my classes to say hi. Talk about a long distance phone call — it was made from about 10,000 miles away!
I also had a very special opportunity to connect with hundreds of students across the nation, including my own! I connected to them using Distance Learning technology. Some refer to this as video conferencing. It was so cool to be able to share so much of what I have been experiencing with so many students. It felt as if I was on top of the world. Even the technical support person who was working with commented how he felt like he was on cloud nine. Teaching and reaching so many students makes all the effort worthwhile and I’m glad that this is what I do.
Here’s a little of what I shared with these students, but in photo form. Enjoy!
