February 8, 2006 - Approaching Chile
| Nuevamente dormí tarde y me perdí el desayuno pero ya a las 1000 horas estaba
en el gym levantado pesas. El movimiento del barco ha bajado bastante y hacer ejercicio es mas seguro.
Después del almuerzo subí a la proa a disfrutar del día. Estaba tan soleado que me tuve que quitar la
parka y el jacket de lana y me quede en mi camisa solamente. Vimos muchas aves hoy incluyendo Antarctic
terns, albatrosses, pingüinos Magallánicos entre otros pero no tuvimos la dicha de ver ningún mamífero
acuático. Los hermanos Koffman (Bess y Toby) nos proveyeron entretenimiento en la proa con canto, una
guitarra y un violín. |

I slept in past breakfast again, but by 1000 hours I was already lifting weights in the
gym. The swells and the rocking of the boat have gone down to almost a standstill so it makes for a pleasant
workout. After lunch I got dressed and went topside. The sun was hitting us so hard that I had to take
my jacket and fleece off and just stood out there in my t-shirt. We saw plenty of Antarctic terns and
albatrosses. We also saw some other birds and a Magellanic penguin but no mammals. The Koffman siblings
(Bess and Toby) came out on deck and treated us to some fiddle and guitar playing, as well as a little
bit of singing. |

| Cuando nos acercamos a Tierra del Fuego empezamos a ver plataformas de petróleo.
Vimos un helicóptero aterrizar en una plataforma y luego cuando despego le dio la vuelta al Gould y volvió
hacia Chile. Después de estar viviendo un mes en el hielo estas señales de civilización nos emocionan. |

As we entered oilrig territory, we saw a helicopter landing on an oilrig. Later it left
and flew past the Gould and went back to Chile. These early signs of civilization are somewhat exciting
after a month living on the ice. |
| Un poco después Ray y Bess nos proveyeron entretenimiento con varias canciones.
A Ray le gustan los Beatles y puede tocar y cantar sus canciones muy bien. |

A little while later Ray and Bess treated us to a few more songs. Ray likes The Beatles
and can play and sing a lot of their songs quite pleasantly. |
| Mientras oíamos su canto el piloto Chileno se monto en el barco. Antes de
poder entrar en aguas Chilenas tiene que montarse en el barco un piloto que nos navegara hasta el muelle
en Punta Arenas. Hemos avanzado tanto que esperamos llegar más temprano que lo indicado y conseguimos
permiso para entrar al muelle a las 0400 horas en vez de la hora original (0800). |

As we enjoyed the music, a Chilean pilot came on board. As we approach Chile, a navigational
pilot must come on board to guide the ship into land. We are ahead of schedule and have been cleared
to dock at Punta Arenas at 0400 instead of our original ETA of 0800 hours. |

| Decidimos esperar el atardecer afuera pero lamentablemente el sol fue bloqueado
por las nubes. Mike y Josh entraron al barco pero yo me quede afuera con varios científicos. Nadie hablo
al respecto pero mientras el sol bajada y se ponía oscuro era obvio que nuestra jornada se terminaba
y nadie quería entrar a la cabina y admitir que nuestra aventura había llegado a su fin. |

We decided to wait outside for the sunset, but the clouds blocked it. Mike and Josh went
inside, while I stayed outside with a few other scientists. We did not talk about it, but it was clear
that this was the end of our adventure. None of us were ready to go back inside the boat, as that meant
admitting the end of a most excellent adventure. |

February 9, 2006 - Punta Arenas, Chile
| El Laurence M. Gould llego a Punta Arenas, Chile alrededor de las 0400 horas
esta mañana. Nosotros nos levantamos a las 0800 y estábamos esperando que dieran las 0900 para preparar
nuestras muestras para el viaje. Rick entro al vagón y nos dijo que a las 0830 prepararíamos las muestras
y por lo tanto subimos ha hacerlo. Solo hicimos las muestras congeladas a -70° C porque no habían suficientes
bolsas con gel para empacar las de -5° C por lo tanto tendríamos que volver mañana. |

The Laurence M. Gould got to Punta Arenas, Chile around
0400 hours this morning and docked. We woke up around 0800 hours and were waiting until 0900 to get our
samples ready. Rick came into our berthing van and told us that we could start at 0830, and so we did.
We prepared the -70° C samples, but
will wait until tomorrow to get the -5° C because they do not have the gel packs we needed. |
| A las 1000 fuimos al almacén de Raytheon para usar el Internet. Mike y yo
hicimos el 5to y 6to turno y esperamos 40 minutos porque la personas se estaban tomando su tiempo. Josh
y yo teníamos que pagar nuestras utilidades a través del Internet. A las 1100 fui a la inspección de
la ropa de invierno. Yo tenía toda mi ropa, la había lavado y nada estaba roto. Aparentemente fue el
único de mi equipo así pues a los demás se les rompió algo. Después que inspeccionan y guardan la ropa
te dan un parcho del Programa Antártico de los Estados Unidos. Este es el mismo parcho que tiene la parca
roja que usamos. |

At 1000 hours we went to the Raytheon warehouse to check our e-mails.
Mike and I were the fifth and sixth persons to get there but still waited 40 minutes to get on due to
the line and the "speedy" e-mailers. Josh and I had to pay bills online and I had a few hundred e-mails
to erase. At 1100, I went to the gear warehouse to return my gear. I had all my gear, which I cleaned,
and none of it was broken. After they inspected our gear, they gave us United States Antarctic Program
patches. These are the same patch that you see in our red parkas. |

| Volvimos al barco para almorzar un buen steak y ensalada. Yo no comí ensalada
pero el mero hecho de verla me dio alegría. Después tuvimos que esperar hasta las 1430 cuando vino el
autobús para llevarnos al hotel. Por lo tanto subimos a la sala a ver nuestra última película en el LMG.
Luego el autobús no dejo en el hotel Tierra del Fuego. |

We went back to the ship for a T-bone lunch and fresh salad. I did not consume any freshies
but it was good just to see them there. Afterwards, we had to wait until 1430 so the shuttle bus could
take us to our hotel. We went up to the lounge to watch our very last movie in the LMG. The bus came
in due time, and we were dropped off at the Tierra del Fuego Hotel. |

| Después de pasar cuatro días y medio en el buque queríamos estirar las piernas
y nos fuimos a caminar. También teníamos que comprar regalos para ciertos familiares y amigos y aprovechamos
la oportunidad que ofrece la plaza de Magallanes. Aquí los artesanos locales venden sus piezas a tremendos
precios. Para mi un souvenir debe ser algo local y típico y eso es una de las dos cosas mas importantes
al visitar otro país. La segunda es disfrutar de la comida local. Al rato nos fuimos al hotel donde nos
bañamos y Josh y yo salimos nuevamente para el hipermercado, donde compramos cositas para comer en el
avión. |

After four and a half days in a ship we did not want to sit around in a hotel room and
so we quickly took to the streets. We needed to do some last minute souvenir shopping for our significant
others and family members. We went to the extremely popular Magellan Square to get some locally crafted
gifts, which in my opinion is one of the two most important things to do when traveling to a new place
(the other most important one is trying the local food). A few hours later we retired to our hotels.
Some showered and some napped while Josh and I went back out to the hypermarket and bought some snacks
for the ride home. |
| A las 1930 nos encontramos con Marianne en su hotel, Hotel Los Navegantes,
el cual parecía ser mas fino que el nuestro. Fuimos a cenar al mismo restaurante donde tuvimos nuestro
ultimo almuerzo en Diciembre, Restaurante Sabores del Mundo. Después de una cena exquisita nos reunimos
en Santoni’s con el resto de la tripulación del barco y pasamos varias horas hablando y despidiéndonos. |

We met Marianne at her hotel, Hotel Los Navegantes, which was a bit more upscale than
ours. We went to dinner at the same restaurant where we had our last lunch before departing Punta Arenas
in December, Restaurante Sabores del Mundo. After a nice dinner, we joined everyone from the ship at
Santino’s, where they were having dinner. We spent a few hours hanging out, trading stories, and saying
our goodbyes. |
