February 5, 2006 - From Palmer to the Drake
| Aunque solo dormir seis horas anoche me siento descansado. Me imagino que
es porque el vagón es totalmente oscuro o quizás porque ya nos vamos para Ohio y estoy bien emocionado
pero indiferentemente de lo que sea estoy listo para cruzar el Drake y volver a mi casa. A las 0830 horas
ya estaba en la estación chequeando mi email y el periódico boricua. Resulta que el artículo no saldrá
hasta mañana lunes pues de salir hoy tendría que ser en blanco y negro pero mañana será en color. Esto
me da alegría y un poco de frustración pues me alegra que mis fotos serán vistas en vivo y a todo color
pero entonces no podré ver el articulo hasta el sábado (quizás el jueves). Termino lo estaba haciendo
y subí al comedor donde la fiesta de despedida me espera. |

Even though I only slept six hours last night I feel fully rested. Maybe it is because
the berthing van provides complete darkness or that I am keyed up because we are heading home today.
Either way, I call on the Mighty Drake to take us home. By 0830 hours I was back on-station in the computer
lab checking e-mail and the Puerto Rican newspaper. The reporter emailed me and said the article will
be in Monday's edition. I am both happy and mad because I cannot read Monday's edition until Thursday
at the earliest, and Saturday at the latest. But he wanted my pictures to be in color as opposed to black
and white, and that meant another day's wait. I wrapped up my emails and headed to the galley where the
goodbye party had started. |
| El comedor esta lleno y las lágrimas abundan. Nosotros hemos pasado el último
mes aquí pero hay gente que lleva tres, cuatro y hasta cinco meses viviendo aquí y para ellos la desdepida
es más fuerte y emotiva. Compartimos abrazos e historias de despedidas mientras el manager de la estación
anuncia que es hora de irnos. Bajamos al muelle donde esta la gente que no estaba en el comedor y la
despedida continua. Josh se perdió el evento por estar dormido y hay gente a quien eso no le agrado pues
querían despedirse pero yo trate de despertarlo y no pude. La gente que se van en el buque no se quieren
montar cuando anuncian que es hora de irse. Yo soy el primero en montarme seguido por Mike y el resto
de la tripulación. Los que están encargados de soltar las líneas lo hacen y de repente nos encontramos
alejándonos del muelle. |

The galley was packed and tears were in no short supply. We have spent the least amount
of time at Palmer, a month, but other folks leaving have spent three, four and even five months and for
them it is a lot harder to say goodbye. We shared some hugs as the station manger announced that it was
time to go. We headed down to the dock area where the hugging and the crying continued. Several people
were upset because Josh did not leave the boat to say goodbye. I tried to wake him but he was out like
a rock. I was the first one in the boat, followed by Mike; slowly but surely the Gould got filled and
we were ready to depart. The line handlers did their duty, and in no time we were free of the docking
area. |

| Las personas en la estación nos dan la tradicional despedida con deseos de
buen viaje mientras sus cuerpos le lanzan al agua fría de la península Antártica. Hoy es muy especial
pues se van muchas personas del personal de la base y la cantidad de gente que brincan es casi historial.
Usualmente se brinca de una de las boyas del muelle pero hoy hubo dobles brincos donde se brincaros de
ambas boyas al mismo tiempo. Nosotros tomamos muchas fotos del muelle y los brincadores mientras todos
se volvían más y más pequeños en el horizonte. |

The station folks gave us the traditional Palmer Station send off, which means they jump
off the pier in celebration and to wish us good and safe travel. Today was very special since a lot of
the station personnel left on this trip yet the amount of jumpers almost seemed like a record! There
were double jumps. Usually jumps are from one of the big black buoys in the pier but today people jumped
from both at the same time. We took many pictures as the pier and the jumpers became smaller and smaller. |

| Las primeras horas del viaje fueron perfectas. Nos alejamos del área de
donde los zodiac son permitidos y nos despedimos de Torgersen, Stepping Stone, Christine y por supuesto
Cormorant. Los icebergs estaban dondequiera y disfrutamos el panorama. Después de una corta conferencia
de seguridad y el almuerzo volvemos a la proa para disfrutar del Neumeyer Channel. A diferencia de cuando
llegamos no hay tanta neblina y podemos verlo todo bien. Mientras salimos del canal vemos dos barcos
que entran. El primero es uno de los buques turísticos de Holland America, el Princesdam el
cual se ve masivo al lado del Gould pero es diminuto al lado del Rótterdam. |

The first few hours of the journey were great. We left the boating
area and said our last goodbyes to Torgersen, Stepping Stones, Christine, and of course, Cormorant. Icebergs
were plentiful and we enjoyed the view. After a brief safety meeting and lunch I was back in the bow
with Josh and Mike. By then we were in the Neumeyer Channel but unlike last time, the fog was not a problem.
As we exited the channel we ran into two tourist vessels. The first one was one of Holland America's
dam ships, the
Prinsendam, which was bigger than the Gould but still smaller than its sister ship,
the Rotterdam. |

| Cinco minutos después le pasamos por el lado al National Geographic Endeavor y
nos percatamos que ese es el buque más pequeño que hemos visto en el área. |

Five minutes later we saw the National Geographic Endeavor. I believe this is the smallest
ship we have seen in these waters. |
| Ya a las 1900 horas es obvio que salimos de la Península y empezamos el viaje
norte pues el vaivén del bote ha empezado. Aunque el movimiento no es tan fuerte es mucho más fuerte
de lo que pasamos cuando bajamos. Yo cogi tres o cuatro videos de la sala y baje al vagón. Mi plan es
pasar el día de mañana y el martes durmiendo y viendo películas. |

By 1900 hours it was clear that we were leaving the Peninsula and entering open waters.
The rolling of the boat has started and even though it is not rough by any means, it was worse than the
worst rolls we experienced coming down. I grabbed three or four VHS movies and plan to spend most of
tomorrow in the van watching movies, writing entries, and sleeping. |

February 6, 2006 - Drake Passage
| Estamos completamente dentro del Drake hoy y al fin podemos decir que tuvimos
la experiencia de ver la intensidad de este cuerpo de agua. El bote empezó a rollar de lado a lado anoche
pero se puso peor con cada hora que pasaba. Durante el día el rollar de lado a lado fue acompañado con
el rollar de frente hacia atrás. Si uno sube a la proa lo único que se ve son las olas dándole al buque
y el agua subiendo a la proa y mojando todo el tope del barco. El vagón en el fondo del buque es sin
duda es mayor sitio para estar. |

We are knee deep in the Drake today and finally can bear witness
to what this passage can do to a ship and its crew. The boat started rolling last night but progressively
got worse by this morning. Sometime in the middle of the day the rolls became pitch changes over big
swells. You see, the ship is no longer only rolling side to side like a baby's cradle, but also moving
front to back like a runaway roller coaster. If you manage to make it out to the deck all you can see
is waves and water crashing into the ship and all the way up the deck. The berthing van is definitely

| Mucha gente están mareados hoy. Aunque tomaron medicamentos tan pronto se
sintió la marea anoche ya era muy tarde. Cuando navegamos al sur tuvimos dos días para acoplarnos al
buque y el movimiento del mar antes del entrar a las aguas feroces del Drake. Claro que bajando a la
Antártica el Drake se comporto muy bien con nosotros. Esta vez no tuvimos ni un solo día para acostumbrarnos
antes de entrar al Drake, el cual nos demostró su fuerza desde el principio. La mayoría del domingo la
pasamos subiendo por la península y el Neumeyer Channel. Y por eso no sentimos la intensidad del mar
hasta que estamos mal afuera. |

A lot of people are seasick today. People took their pills and patches,
but it was too late. When we came south we had two whole days before entering the Drake so the land lovers
could get used to life on a boat and the movement of the ocean prior to the "rough" waters.
Of course, the Drake was a perfect gentleman last time so nobody could imagine its intensity. This time
as we head north, we did not even have a full day at "sea" before entering the Drake. Most
of the day's journey was moderated by the Neumeyer Channel and by the time we made it to open waters,
it was too late. |
| Más de la mitad de nuestro equipo esta enfermo y eso parece ser así para
el resto de la tripulación. Yo estoy bien y me rehusó a tomar medicamentos. Quiero sobrevivir la experiencia
y decir que lo hice sin droga alguna. Si me mareo y me enfermo pues devolveré mi comida al mar y buscare
mas comida en el comedor. Todavía no he tenido desayuno en el bote en tres días por estar durmiendo.
Me imagino que después de un mes de dormir solo cuatro a cinco horas por noche me merezco un poco de
descanso. Así que en vez de ser una vaca de proa, como cuando bajamos, soy una vaca de vagón. |

More than half of our crew is ill. That seems to be the norm around the ship. I still
refuse to take medication and am hanging in there; I want to survive the experience drug free so I can
boast about it in the future. And if I get sick, I will return my meals to the sea and gather new ones.
I have yet to make it to breakfast in three mornings as I have slept in. I figure that after a month
of sleeping four to five hours/night on average I can take a few days to sleep. Instead of a bow cow,
like I was on the way down, I am now a van cow. |
| La mayoría del día hoy me la pase viendo películas en el vagón y adelantando
lecturas acerca de mi mosca, la lombriz de la mañaza. Ya estoy listo para volver a trabajar con moscas
"grandes" que tienen alas y un desarrollo más impredecible. |

I spent most of the day in the berthing van watching movies and
getting caught up with my apple maggot work. I am ready to get back to working on "big" flies
with wings and a more unpredictable life cycle. |

February 7, 2006 - Drake Passage
| Hoy fue un día bien lento a bordo del Gould. La mayoría del día fue igual
que ayer; el barco rolando de lado a lado mientras todo el mundo trataba de hacer su trabajo. Yo me quede
en el vagón con Josh viendo películas hasta el medio día cuando subimos para almorzar y nos dimos cuenta
que la mayoría de la gente había hecho lo mismo (cuando me refiero a la mayoría de la gente siempre hablo
de los científicos pues los empleados del barco trabajan todo el día y la noche en turnos). |

Today was a very slow day for most aboard the Gould. Most of the day was the same as
yesterday, with big rolls in every direction and people just trying to do their thing. I stayed in the
van with Josh until noon when we emerged for lunch and found that most people had done the same (of course
references to most people always excludes the crew that runs the ship and is meant to only include the
scientists and their helpers). |
| La proa todavía se baña con agua de las olas que dan con el barco y no se
ve nada ni siquiera para fotografiar. Pasamos la tarde viendo películas en la sala pero alrededor de
las 1800 horas el vaivén del mar se tranquilizo un poco. Se supone que saldremos del Drake a la media
noche y mientras más nos acercamos a esa hora menos movimiento sentimos. Esta mañana cuando escribía
mi diario en la cama se me hacia difícil y me mareaba pero ahora apenas noto la silla moverse en el laboratorio
de computadoras del barco. |

The deck is still getting flooded by the waves so there is nothing to see or take pictures
of. We spent the afternoon and most of the night watching various movies in the lounge. But around 1800
hours the swells became less and less powerful. We are expected to emerge from the Drake sometime around
midnight and as the hour approaches, the rocking and rolling of the boat diminish. This morning as I
finished my journal entries for yesterday, the computer seat would spin as I wrote, which made it very
difficult. Right now as I type, I barely notice that I am on the same ship. |
| Mañana promete ser tremendo día ya que nos acercamos más a América del Sur
y entramos en el estrecho de Magallanes. Nuevamente podremos ver aves y mamíferos acuáticos. |
|
Tomorrow will be a great day as we approach South America and enter the Straits of Magellan.
Once again, we will be in a position to see many birds and marine mammals. |
