December 31, 2005 - Punta Arenas, Chile (52° S Latitude)
| El día de año viejo es bien excitante en Punta Arenas. Pero eso no tiene nada que ver
con el nuevo año y todo que ver con los dos cruceros que hay en el muelle justamente al frente de Laurence
M Gould, el cual sale mañana. El muelle esta bien ocupado hoy y nuevamente nos encontramos desayunando
a las 8 en el hotel. Rápidamente salimos hacia el cementerio de Punta Arenas. Allí estamos buscando la
tumba del indio desconocido. La información que pudimos conseguir nos indica que este indio hizo algo
importante en la historia Chilena y por lo tanto tiene un monumento aquí. En la foto se ven muchas placas
alrededor de la estatua, las cuales expresan gracias por su sacrificio y sus milagros. Ofrendas en formas
de flores mayormente se encuentra a su alrededor. Algunos le han dejado dulces y hasta cigarrillos. Aquí
Marianne decide dejarle un pedazo de chicle. |

New Year’s Eve is pretty exciting around Punta Arenas. This has little to do with the
New Year and everything to do with the two huge cruise ships full of tourists and the Laurence M.
Gould leaving tomorrow. The dock was busy today and we once again awoke by 8 and had breakfast at our hotel.
Soon after that we headed out to the cemetery. We were in search of the unnamed Indian. As far as we
can tell this was some sort of heroic Chilean Indian that to this day is still thanked for his selfless
sacrifice. Most of the plaques around the Indian show messages of deep appreciation. Offerings in the
form of flowers and the occasional cigarette or candy are made. Marianne decided to leave a stick of
gum as an offering. |

| El cementerio como tal es hermoso. Tiene muchos mausoleos familiares. La cantidad de
árboles dentro del cementerio me sorprendió también. Las tumbas están muy bien mantenidas dado que la
mayoría tienen flores frescas en buenas condiciones. Aquí hicimos un nuevo amigo el cual se unió a nuestro
grupo por un rato. |

The cemetery is just gorgeous. It is mostly made up of family mausoleums. Families must
tend to their loved ones quite regularly, as most graves have healthy flowers on them. We made a friend
here that followed us around for a while, but sadly could not accompany us to our next destination. |

| Al frente del cementerio se encuentra el museo de historia nacional. Con
simplemente dos mil pesos conocimos la historia de los primero habitantes de la región también como la
fauna y flora local. Lamentablemente para ustedes el museo no permite fotografía y en verdad lo lamento
pues es impresiónate la historia de este área del mundo. Uno de las cosas que me fascinó más que nada
fueron los insectos, obviamente. Pero específicamente un caculo de antena larga. El primer par de alas
de un caculo se le conoce como la elytra. Esto es porque ese par esta esclerotizado (duro) y protege
el segundo par y el abdomen. Pues este caculo tenía la elytra reducida de tal forma que parecían halteres.
Los halteres son el segundo par de alas de una mosca. Las moscas los usan para equilibrar su vuelo. Parecen
unas paletitas de dulce en miniatura conectadas al tórax del insecto. Lo único que podía pensar era donde
están los taxonomistas de OSU y mas que nada donde este el Dr. Wenzel cuando necesito tu ayuda para identificar
algo. |

Across the street from the cemetery is the Natural History Museum.
A cover charge of 2,000 “pesos” gave us a look at the history of primitive Chilean Indians and the local
fauna and flora. No pictures were allowed and this was a shame, as we saw some impressive displays. We
also saw one of the most amazing insects we have even seen. It was a long-horned beetle with reduced elytra.
Elytra are the hardened and roof-like pair of wings of beetles that protect the 2nd pair of wings and
the abdomen. This cerambycid’s elytra were reduced in such a manner that they looked like halteres.
Halteres are the modified second pair of wings on true flies. These look like small clubs and serve as
stability organs in flight. As entomologists, we were fascinated. All I could think was what will
the museums guys think,
and where is Dr. Wenzel when I need him to tell me what this beetle is? |
| Varias horas después nos dirigimos al hotel. El check out era al medio día
y Raytheon nos vendría a buscar alrededor de las dos. Por lo tanto empacamos, hicimos el check out y
salimos a almorzar a otro magnifico restaurante. Después bajamos al muelle y nos montamos en el barco.
El Gould se ve nuevo y brilloso aunque lleva varios años en circulación en esta área. |

Several hours later we headed back to the hotel. Check-out time was noon and
Raytheon would pick us up around 1:45 pm. Therefore we packed, checked out, and went out to lunch
to yet another amazing restaurant. Afterwards we rode down to the docks and got on the boat. The Gould looks
new and shiny even though it has been in service for a while. |

| La tripulación y el resto de los científicos nos dieron una calida bienvenida y un breve
entrenamiento acerca del la embarcación. Bajamos nuestro equipaje hasta nuestra habitación por unas escaleras
que inspiran poca confianza. |

The crew and scientists aboard were very friendly and welcomed us warmly. We carried
our gear down some dangerous looking stairs into our “room”. |
| Nuestro nuevo hogar es el starboard berthing van (básicamente un container de carga).
Aunque parece ser incomodo no lo es para nada. El movimiento y los sonidos del barco apenas se sienten
cuando uno estos varios pisos debajo de la borda, así que no nos quejamos. |

Our new home is the starboard berthing van (a.k.a. cargo container). I believe the picture
speaks for itself. Even though it is a tight fit, it suits us well for our journey. The motion and sounds
of the ship are barely noticeable several floors below deck; therefore, we have no complaints. |

| Yo no cene hoy pues quería ir al gimnasio. Llevaba ya varios días sin poder
hacer ejercicio y me sentía bien letárgico. Mike y Josh salieron para correr en la playa y el muelle.
Después del ejercicio, salí a la plaza en busca de unas chancletas para la ducha. Es increíble que con
tantas que tengo se me olvido traerme un par pero por 1,500 pesos no me quejo. Después volví al puerto
donde al fin me pude comunicar con mi mama y mi esposa. Las extraño a las dos tanto y apenas puedo dormir
sin mí esposa a mi lado. Tan pronto llegue a Palmer el miércoles o jueves llamare a mi papá y mi hermana. |

I skipped dinner to go to the gym. I had not lifted weights for several days and felt
lethargic. Mike and Josh went out to run on the beach and pier for a while. Soon after working out, I
went out to the city looking for a pair of flip flops for the shower. 1,500 “pesos” later, and I was
back on the Gould. I was able to check my e-mail and call my mom and wife over at the Raytheon building.
I miss them so much; I can barely sleep without my wife next to me. |
| Por la noche decidimos ver el documental acerca del famoso viaje Antártico
de Ernest Schackleford titulado The Endurance. Se lo recomiendo a todos pues es bien educativo. Duraba
más de dos horas y terminamos de verlo a la una de la mañana. Sin embargo a la media noche tuvimos que
salir a la cubierta para ver los fuegos artificiales. El barco de la marina Chilena que estaba detrás
del Gould lanzo alrededor de 30 luces de bengala, fue bien impresionante. El espectáculo de los fuegos
artificiales Chileno duro 25 minutos y nos mantuve bien entretenidos. Brindamos el nuevo año con unas
galletitas de higo (las cuales me recordaron a mi papá). Mis pensamientos residían en mi esposa. Después
Marianne hizo un comentario que se quedo conmigo el resto de la noche. Ella me pregunto que dado donde
empecé el año 2006 que si me podría imaginar donde empezaría el 2007. Honestamente no se… |

At night we decided to watch the Ernest Shackleford documentary The
Endurance. It lasted
well into one in the morning. At midnight the fireworks started so we went out on the deck and enjoyed
them. We toasted the New Year with Fig Newtons and good thoughts. My thoughts dwelled on my wife. Later
Marianne said something that stuck with me. Given where we started this year, she wondered where we will
start the next one. I have to admit I will ponder on that for a while. |
