December 29, 2005 - Punta Arenas, Chile (52° S Latitude)

Cuando llegamos a Santiago nos encontramos con Jimmy, un representante de Raytheon. El nos ayuda a rápidamente pasar por aduana, el reclamo de equipaje, el check in del próximo vuelo en Lan Chile y nos llevo hasta la salida para la conexión a Punta Arenas. En verdad nos hizo sentir como personas bien importantes y lo disfrutamos. Desde el momento que abordamos el avión en Columbus nos tomo alrededor de 20 horas llegar a Punta Arenas, Chile.

We were met in Santiago by a Raytheon representative named Jimmy. He got us through customs, baggage claim, and ready for our next flight — bypassing all the lines. We felt like VIPs and it was nice. From the moment we got on the plane in Columbus it took about 20 hours, given the time zone changes, to make it to Punta Arenas, Chile.

Tan pronto me baje del avión me parecía como si hubiese estado aquí antes. La razón es que Punta Arenas tiene muchas semejanzas a varios pueblos costaneros en Puerto Rico. El personal de Raytheon nos informo que nos quedaríamos en el hotel Tierra del Fuego y eso nos agrado mucho pues ese hotel era nuestra primera opción. Hicimos nuestro check in y rápidamente me di un bien necesario baño. Después salimos afuera a explorar. Caminamos por un rato, cambiamos nuestro dinero Americano por pesos Chilenos y terminamos en la Plaza de Magallanes. Allí esta la estatua famosa a la cual se le frota el dedo gordo del pie como señal de buena suerte en el próximo viaje náutico. Como pueden ver en la foto, todos frotamos el dedo como si no hubiera más nada que hacer. El Dr. Lee ha ido varias veces a la Antártica y lo ha frotado previamente.

As soon as we deplaned I felt as if I had been here already. Punta Arenas resembles a few small costal towns that we have in Puerto Rico. We were told by the Raytheon folks that we would be staying at the Tierra del Fuego hotel — our first choice, so we were pleased. We checked in and I immediately took a most needed shower after two days of traveling. Afterwards, we took to the streets to explore. We walked around for a while, exchanged our U.S. currency for Chilean “pesos”, and ended up in the Magallanes Plaza. Here sits the famous statue whose big toe we must rub for good luck in our travel. As you can see, we all took our turns rubbing the statue. Dr. Lee had rubbed the statue a few times in his previous Antarctic travels.

Disfrutamos de una exquisita comida en el restaurante del hotel. La cena en Chile tradicionalmente empieza a las 8 de la noche. Pero como el sol en el verano en Punta Arenas no baja hasta las 11pm, no nos afecto tanto el comer temprano. Dos otros científicos que pasaran varios meses en el barco Gould se unieron a nuestro grupo para la cena. Aquí esta el recibo de la cena, el cual nos impresiono bastante cuando llego.

We enjoyed dinner in the hotel restaurant. In Chile, dinner is traditionally started at 8 pm. Of course the sun does not set in Punta Arenas during the summer until somewhere close to 11 pm, so the late dinner was ok for us. Two other researchers that will spend several months on the Gould joined the five of us for dinner. The meal was delicious but just look at our bill — WOW!

54,050 pesos Chilenos era el total. Es verdad que eso suena como mucho pero cuando tomas en consideración que un peso Americano se convierte en 500 Chilenos pues la cena solo salio en alrededor de $108. Y considerando que 7 personas comimos eso es un precio muy bueno.

54,050 Chilean pesos sounds like a scary number, but when you consider that one U.S. dollar is equivalent to 500 Chilean dollars, then the meal actually cost around $108. For seven people that is a very comfortable price.

Mañana tenemos que reportarnos a las nueve y media con el personal de Raytheon Polar Services para buscar nuestra ropa para la Antártica. Luego tendremos la oportunidad de pasar un día como turistas en Punta Arenas.

Tomorrow we have 9:30 am appointments with the Raytheon Polar Services folks to pick up our extreme weather gear. We want to do some tourist type activities tomorrow. We shall see.
