| Bienvenidos a mi diario. Si leyó mi reseña ya sabe quien soy y si no lo ha echo pues que espera,
le prometo que no es aburrida. Soy un estudiante en la Universidad del estado de Ohio en Columbus, Ohio. Allí estudio el efecto que
tienen las diferentes condiciones extremas como la deshidratación, el calor y el frió en los insectos y la habilidad de estos
para sobrevivir esas condiciones. Yo nací y me crié en San Juan, Puerto Rico y toda mi vida me ha atraído el trabajo de
investigación pero quería hacerlo como veterinario. Pero a veces uno se enamora de lo menos esperado y así encontré mi
pasión en los insectos. Originando en el Caribe, no estoy acostumbrado al frió ni a la nieve pero me encantan ambos. Esa fue parte
de la razón por la cual vine a Ohio, la otra fue una beca académica. Siempre he soñado en poder ir de vacaciones a la Antártica y en
tan solo dos semanas estaré allí. Y aunque este viaje no es de placer como tal se sentirá así pues me encanta estar en el laboratorio
trabajando los siete días de la semana (aunque lo reduje a 5 y medio desde que me case). Para mi estar experimentando e inventado en
el laboratorio es una de mis cosas favoritas por lo tanto disfrutare este viaje de investigación al máximo. En este diario compartiré
con ustedes mis experiencias en el sur del mundo en el lugar con el tiempo más peligroso en el planeta mientras realizo uno de los
sueños y una de las metas de mi vida. |

Welcome to my journal. If you read my Bio you know who I am, but if you did not then what are
you waiting for? (It is not that boring.) I am a student at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. I study the effects of stress
on insects and their ability to recover and survive the stress. I was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. All my lifeI wanted
to be a researcher, but my goals were veterinary science and not entomology. But sometimes you fall in love with something and cannot
let it go and so I discovered the wonderful world of the insects. Being from the Caribbean, I am not used to low temperatures or snow
but I do love them both. That is one of the reasons I came to OSU, the other being full tuition scholarship from the Office of Minority
Affairs. My ultimate dream vacation has always being going to Antarctica and in about two weeks I will be there. Even though this is a work
trip and not a vacation it will still feel like one to me. I usually work 10 to 12 hour days in the lab (taking off 2 hours for the gym)
and I work all seven days (5.5 since I got married). Science is one of my favorite things to do, so this trip in fact will be as much fun
as a vacation. In my journal I will take you to the most extreme environment on the planet and share with you the realization of one of my
life’s dreams. |
| Después de lo que parecía una eternidad de eventos caóticos, el viernes 3 recibí un correo electrónico con mi itinerario para
el viaje. El siguiente jueves recibí uno de los mejores mensajes de mi vida cuando me llamaron y me dijeron que estaba físicamente listo para
viajar a la Antártica. Porque? |

After what seemed like an eternity of chaotic events, on Friday the 3rd I received an e-mail that requested
that I confirm my flight itinerary for Punta Arenas, Chile. On Thursday the 15th I was notified that I was physically qualified to travel to
Antarctica. I am almost 100% sure that this was the best e-mail I have ever received in my life. Why? |
| Pues verán, yo me case en Agosto 27 de este año después una relación de larga distancia con el amor de mi vida de casi 7 años.
Los meses antes de la boda los pase bien ocupado con preparativos y los meses después los pase ajustándome a la vida matrimonial. Además pase
mucho tiempo en citas de doctores para el viaje y a la misma vez aprendiendo todo lo que pudiera acerca de
Bélgica e Ixodes (la mosca y la garrapata
de la Antártica). Después que el Dr. Rinehart (el viajo allá el año pasado) y yo identificamos
mas de 100 genes de la mosca Bélgica, me tomo a mi la tarea de confirmar si la mosca usaba los genes durante periodos de deshidratación.
La investigación ha sido bien excitante e interesante pero toma mucho tiempo. Durante este tiempo también serví como asistente de maestro al
Dr. David Denlinger (el cual también viajo el año pasado) en su clase de fisiología del insecto.
Eso también toma mucho tiempo pero como me encantan los retos aquí estoy. |

Well, you see, I got married on August 27th of this year after an almost 7-year-old long distance relationship
with the woman of my dreams. The months prior to that were busy with wedding stuff. The months following that have been busy with living adjustments,
Antarctic-related doctor visits, and learning as much about Belgica and
Ixodes (the midge and the tick) as I could. Dr Rinehart
(from last year’s trip) and I identified a great many genes from Belgica, but it was up to me to confirm whether or not the flies used those
genes during periods of dehydration. The work has been exciting and interesting but very time consuming. I was also the teaching assistant to
Dr Dave Denlinger (one of the Principal Investigators for this grant) in his Insect Physiology course
and that has been demanding as well. But I love challenges, so here I am. |
| Encima de todo lo que estaba pasando, para poder viajar a la Antártica hay que estar físicamente capacitado. Como verán en las fotos yo
estoy en muy buena forma física (:)) pero eso no es suficiente así que tuve (al igual que el resto del equipo) que ir a muchas
citas medicas. A mi me encanta los dulces y las galletas pero ambos pueden ser muy malos para los dientes. Pues aparentemente me gustan más los dulces que
cepillarme los dientes. Si me cepillo los dientes varias veces al día pero no me gusta usar hilo dental. Pues el no usar hilo dental afecto mi estado para el
viaje. Resulta que tenía cinco caries nuevas este año y todas en la parte de atrás de los dientes donde solo el hilo dental puede llegar. Tuve suerte
cuando encontré un magnifico doctor Boricua (Dr. Rolando Martínez) el cual me arreglo todos mis dientes en dos días y me ayudo a estar físicamente capacitado
para el viaje. |

In the midst of this, I had to get physically qualified for this trip. I am not lacking in personal fitness (as pictures
will show :)), but that is not enough. I had (as we all did) to go through extensive medical examinations to determine my worthiness
for the ultimate trip. I love candy, I love sugar, I love cookies and all of these are very bad for teeth, regardless of age. Turns out that I love sweets and
I love to brush my teeth (not really but I do it), but I do not love flossing. And not flossing, believe it or not, almost prevented me from doing my march down
to Antarctica. I had 5 new cavities this year — all behind my teeth where the brush cannot reach and flossing is the only way to prevent them. And because of
this I almost could not go. But I found a very good dentist (Dr Rolando Martinez, no relation but both from the same place) and he took care of my teeth. |
| Ahora solo faltan once días para el despliegue y ya estoy preparando mis maletas. Lo primero que empaque después de la computadora y las cámaras
es el hilo dental, pues no permitiré que una carie arriesgue mis planes en el futuro. Además de eso cuando uno viaje a un medio ambiente tan peligroso
como el Polo Sur, se necesitan ciertos artículos de primera necesidad. Entre esos aquí esta unas fotos de los dos más importantes (perfume y calzado). |
| Now as I only have 11 days until deployment, I am already packing my bags. The first
thing in there after the cameras and my laptop is my dental floss, because no cavities are ever going to risk my travels again. Among the things that I am
packing are some crucial items such as my cologne (which as you can tell was made for this trip). And of course the appropriate footwear is very important for
such as trip, and as you can see I am ready. |

Niño Escucha y de hecho llegue a terminar mi meta de convertirme en Escucha Águila. Durante ese
tiempo fui a dos Jamborees nacionales los cuales fueron en el Fuerte A. P. Hill en Virginia. Uno
de ellos se titulaba La Aventura Comienza... |

The adventure begins...Wow that really brings me back. I was a Boy Scout — actually I made it all the way to
Eagle Scout — and I attended two National Jamborees on Fort A. P. Hill in Virginia in 1989 and 1993. One of them was entitled The Adventure
Begins... |
| Aventura es una de esas cosas que se puede definir bien subjetivamente
dependiendo de la persona y la situación. Algunos dirán que una aventura envuelve viaje, riesgo
y cierta incertidumbre. Otros dicen que ser valiente suficiente para ir de compras el día de
Noche Buena o el día después de Navidad es una aventura. Sin embargo para mí una aventura es
algo fuera de lo ordinario, lo cual envuelve cierta cantidad de riesgo, con un poco de incertidumbre,
la cual es emocionante y nunca se repetirá. Pues al final del día una aventura puede ser muchas
cosas diferentes pero siempre es única. Por eso es que estoy seguro que cualquier persona diría
que esto no solo es una aventura pero la aventura de mi vida. |

Adventure is one of those things that is defined very subjectively.
Some say an adventure involves travel, risk, and uncertainty. Others will claim that braving
the mall the day before or after Christmas is all the adventure they need. To me, an adventure
is something out of the ordinary. It involves a certain amount of risk, some uncertainty, a
high level of excitement, and the assurance that it will not be repeated. At the end of the
day an adventure is above everything else unique. I am safe to say that everyone will call
this trip not only an adventure, but the adventure of my life. |
| La mamá de Josh nos dejo en el aeropuerto tres horas antes
del vuelo. Yo tenía mucho equipaje. Además de la ropa, los zapatos, las toallas y los artículos de primera necesidad para
seis semanas, también tenía una caja dentro de mi maleta con materiales de investigación. Mí maleta verde pesa 55 libras,
mientras la azul pesa 27. Los dos bultos de mano pesan como 20 libras cada uno. Después de reportarnos con la aerolínea,
fuimos al área de seguridad. Allí perdí 15 minutos con los chicos del TSA (Transportation and Security Agency).
Aparentemente mis cámaras, binoculares, computadora portátil y lo que ven en la foto me clasifica como el tipo de persona
al cual hay que revisarle la ropa en busca de armas escondidas. |

Josh and I were dropped off at the airport by his mom. I had a lot of luggage.
Besides all my clothing, footwear, towels and personal hygiene items to last for 6 weeks,
I also had a box of research supplies. My big green suitcase weighed in at 55 lbs and
the duffel bag at 27 lbs. The two small carry-ons weigh about 20 lbs each. So after check
in, we headed down to security screening. After a 15 minute scan and touch session with
the boys from the Transportation and Security Agency (TSA), I was ready to go. Apparently
to them, my two cameras, binoculars, laptop, and the supplies you see in the picture
made a pat down necessary. |

| Yo nunca he viajado por nueve horas en un avión y por lo tanto ese viaje de
Dallas a Chile me tiene un poco nervioso. A mi me gusta estar de pie y activo todo el tiempo por lo cual
este vuelo será tan difícil para mi como el viaje de dos días para cruzar las aguas traicioneras del Drake.
Bueno estamos a punto de abordar. |

This nine-hour flight from Dallas to Santiago (Chile) has me a little
shaken. I am the type of person that likes to move around a lot. So this flight might be as big a challenge
for me as the 2 days over the wild waters of the Drake. We are about to board. |
