Watercolor Batik on Washi

This exciting workshop will explore a unique twist to the ancient process of batik. Each participant will create several beautiful, contemporary works of art using high grade watercolor paints to tint and stain selected rice papers. Just like the traditional process of batik, hot wax will be applied to the washi papers, incorporating the artists’ designs, before paint is brushed across the paper’s surface. Students will produce stunning, colorful results that seem to have a magical beauty. These batik instructions and demos will go beyond the traditional batik methods by incorporating watercolor paints, sumi ink, and washi papers with multiple layers of hot wax applications, resulting in spontaneous looking works of art. Originality and experimentation will be strongly encouraged for those making discoveries with this age-old art.
