The Big Block: Fused Glass

Kiln formed glass (fused glass) is one of the oldest techniques of working with glass, pre-dating glass blowing by hundreds of years. From these early beginnings fused glass is now being taken to a whole new depth. In this class, we will focus on creating multi-dimensional fused glass art blocks. Students will build layers of images on glass by utilizing different forms of frit, stringer and sheets. The finished block will take on a three dimensional quality. Students will experiment with various materials, layouts and firing techniques to develop individual process for desired shapes and blend of image.

Sandra Gross has been working in glass since 2003, when her exploration to find transparency led her to glass in graduate school at Miami University. She was a finalist and winner at the Niche Awards in Philadelphia for Sculptural and Functional Glass. She was also a finalist in Bullseye Emerge 2004. Sandra received the Labino award for glass in the 2009 Best of Ohio show. Currently, she shows her fused work at Mica Contemporary Craft and the Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati.
