Drawing and Sculpting Elements of Nature

This course is designed to help students develop a personal vocabulary of forms and shapes that reference nature. Students will work from natural objects to build ceramic forms and to create drawings. The idea of this course is not to replicate nature, but instead to use natural objects as a beginning reference point to create personally unique new forms and imagery. Students will begin by using natural found objects of their own choice (seed pods, stones, sea shells, etc.) as inspiration for drawings and works in clay.

Kate Sprengnether has been working in clay for almost 20 years. She earned a BA, as an art major, from Ursuline College in Ohio, and an MFA in ceramics from Syracuse University. Her work has been exhibited in upstate NY, Cleveland, OH, Lexington, KY and several other regional states. She received a grant from the Kentucky Foundation for Women in 2004 for the creation of a body of work. Kate currently lives in Lexington, KY, with her artist husband and two children.   Gallery
