Stop Motion Animation

Students will create four separate animated shorts employing a variety of techniques for capturing images, building scenes and manipulating the persistence of vision. Instruction will cover issues of controlled lighting, indexing, pixilation, simple armature construction and creating a stable camera/stage relationship. International examples of stop-motion shorts will be used for inspiration. Discussion will cover the addition of audio tracks and preparation of finished works for YouTube. Students must have a digital camera AND a strong working knowledge of that camera as there will not be time for individual camera instruction.

Kurt Gohde teaches at Transylvania University in Lexington, KY. His studio work includes sculpture, digital imaging, installation and video. Recent works have included a “Stalker for Hire” competition, a “Homicidal Walking Tour” and a 5-year baseball card project featuring homeless people from Cincinnati. Rings of Responsibility is a commissioned sea-change artwork designed to initiate a national dialogue on gun responsibility (view online at http://www.headfirstslide.com/).
