Building Rustic Furniture
This workshop is for anyone who has ever enjoyed a walk in the woods and wanted to bring part of that experience back to their home in the form of rustic (twig) furniture. No previous experience in woodworking is necessary as basic rustic construction techniques will be covered. However, students who have built traditional furniture will also be challenged by constructing things made from twigs and branches. Students will not only look at examples of rustic furniture and learn its history but also discuss ways of thinking about using natural forms. Each student will use simple tools to create work such as chairs, tables, headboards, stools, garden structures and/or other furniture forms. Participants should be healthy adults with normal strength and eye/hand coordination.
Liz Hunt has been making rustic furniture for the past 21 years and her work has been exhibited throughout Ohio and in Canada. It has been published in numerous rustic furniture books and magazines such as Woodwork and Columbus Monthly. Her work has appeared in a nationally syndicated TV show (As The World Turns) as well as at the White House. Liz has conducted workshops and given presentations on rustic furniture for various groups including the Ohio Craft Museum, Conover Workshops, and Red Deer College, Alberta. Over the years, her work has evolved from traditional to more contemporary one-of-a-kind forms and has been described as “whimsical,” “original,” and “sculptural.” Liz currently lives and works on a small farm in Delaware, Ohio.
