Dr. Karen L. Dawisha, the Havighurst Professor of Political Science and Director of the Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies, has just returned from meetings in Russia with the heads of the major political parties and President Putin. The next major elections in Russia could herald great political changes for the nation. What are the main issues on the political landscape in Russia? What kind of campaigns are parties running? What lies in the balance for U.S.-Russian cooperation and conflict in core areas including NATO and EU expansion, Iranian nuclear power, and Russia’s emergence as an energy superpower? Join Dr. Dawisha for an in-depth look at power and transition in Russia.

Newport Aquarium Tour

Newport Aquarium showcases thousands of animals from around the world in a million gallons of fresh and salt water. Explore the aquarium two ways:
Enjoy a self-guided tour of the aquarium. Learn about world rivers, sharks, the Amazon Flooded Forest, and more!
Tour the aquarium, and enjoy an optional, 45 minute Behind-the-Scenes tour of this world-class facility. See vet labs, water testing stations, how meals are prepared for animals, and more!

While you visit Newport on the Levee, you can dine at restaurants such as Aoi Japanese Cuisine, Brio Tuscan Grille, or Dewey’s Pizza, and shop at many stores including Mango Arts, Levee Gifts, and Cincinnati Photography.

There is such a thing as a free lunch... If you bring a dish to share! Luncheon begins at noon. Dr. Robert Benson will present on Frank Lloyd Wright.

This year the menu will be organized alphabetically. The first letter of your last name will determine what you should bring. With each dish, please make enough to feed 6 to 8 people. For names beginning in:

A through H, please bring an entree
I through M, please bring vegetables or salad
N through S, please bring a dessert
T through W, please bring an appetizer
X through Z, please bring bread and butter

 

Ghyslain Chocolate Factory Tour

Thursday, February 14

8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Your tour begins with a short video introduction to the story of Ghylsan Chocolatier. Learn how Ghyslain’s chocolates are shipped around the world, and meet our pastry staff as they create beautiful desserts. Finally, visit the chocolate production area and learn how Ghyslain’s chocolates are made.

 

The Present Age of Aging: A Journey through 70 Years and into the Future: Thursday, October 11

Historically unprecedented population aging is forcing leaders in the public and private sectors worldwide to rethink assumptions about everything from public and organizational policies to social roles at mid and later life. Dr. Manheimer will take us on a journey through a series of paradigms or frameworks to bring us to the present age of aging and its implications, particularly for lifelong learning. His presentation will incorporate social, historical, economic, psychological, and philosophical dimensions and will draw on examples from the U.S., UK, Japan, Spain and China.

ILR members are encouraged to attend the follow-up reception in the Shriver multi-purpose room, directly following Dr. Manheimer's speech.

What was life like in frontier Indiana? Visit Conner Prairie, a living history museum where you can experience the America of 200 years ago. Visit period homes, talk to reenactors, and learn about period crafts, homes and living.

The Taft Museum: Thursday, March 8 2007

The Taft Museum in Cincinnati contains some of the finest artwork produced in America. Enjoy great works, not on the austere walls of a gallery, but hung naturally in the rooms of a historic mansion. This trip coincides with a special exhibit of Luminist artwork. See 55 paintings depicting calm landscapes alive with atmosphere and light.

 

Tour of Freedom Center: Feb. 8 2007

State-of-the-art, interactive exhibits will provide a look at the past and future of freedom in the world. See, contemplate, and discuss the price and meaning of freedom.

Music Hall Tour and Rehearsal: Jan. 11 2007

Visit Cincinnati’s Music Hall, a renowned venue for the arts for over a century. Explore the “romantic eclecticism” of this Ohio landmark, then enjoy a rehearsal of music by Sibelius and Tchaikovsky in the spacious Springer Auditorium.

Krohn Conservatory and Playhouse in the Park: October 4th 2006

Participants will visit nationally known Krohn Conservatory. Built in 1933, this greenhouse houses thousands of types of plant life in several simulated climates. Stroll through the different climate areas, and enjoy the work of expert florists in a special fall flower exhibit, “Alpine Gardens.” After visiting Krohn, enjoy lunch on your own at the Cincinnati Art Museum's Terrace Cafe. Then travel to Cincinnati's Playhouse in the Park to see Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck's enduring tale of friendship and tragedy in the depression-era West. Lennie and George are two migrant workers in search of security and land of their own amidst the hardships of the 1930s. Will they succeed? Or will their difficulties spiral out of control?

 

Fossil Hunt: September 26th 2006

In the former ocean bed that is the Midwest, fossils are abundant. Now you can find your own samples of prehistory on an exciting cross-country fossil hunt. Leaving Miami at 9 a.m. participants will visit one or two roadcuts to search the exposed hill for fossils. Pack your own food for a picnic lunch at noon at the scenic Brookville Reservoir overlook. Rest rooms will be available at this time.

 

Past ILR Travel Study tours visited Kentucky, Spain, the Shaw Festival, Italy, Canada, and Eastern Europe.

January 2007: Birding Hotspots of Costa Rica

Hardy Eshbaugh led the recent birding trip to Costa Rica, an exciting tour on which ILR members explored towns and forests while observing amazing animals in their natural habitats.


Spring 2005: AQS Quilt Show and Contest in Paducah, Kentucky

In April 2005, program leader Joyce Ponder led a tour to the American Quilter's Society Quilt Show and Contest held in Paducah, Kentucky. Participants enjoyed the quilting extravaganza, a three nights stay at the Kentucky Dam Village State Resort, and the sights of the unique town of Paducah.

May 2005: Spain

Connie and Heanon Wilkins led the 14-day May 2005 excursion through Spain, taking the group from Madrid to Barcelona, where they explored the country that is home to the iconic flamenco dancers and bullfighters.



Fall 2005: Shaw Festival

Betsey Knight led the recent travel study tour to the Shaw Festival in August 2005. Participants viewed the renowned acting ensemble that has enjoyed critical and popular success performing the plays of George Bernard Shaw and his contemporaries. The festival was set in the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, a winner of the "Prettiest Town in Canada" Award.

Nova Scotia & Newfoundland, Summer 2003

A group of ILR members ventured to Nova Scotia for 15 days with program leader Hardy Eshbaugh. They traveled from Halifax to Tor Bay on the Eastern Shore and visited Cape Breton Island's Highland Shore. Below: Members pose in Nova Scotia during the first part of their tour.
