AP and Transfer Credit

Our #1 goal as a program is to make sure, first and foremost, that all Miami students receive the writing instruction they need to succeed not only academically but professionally, in their future careers, and personally as well. In general we believe that the more writing instruction that students receive, the better. The vast majority of Miami students do need the kind of intense writing instruction and writing practice that we offer in ENG 111 and ENG 112.

However, we also want to make sure that students who have taken college-level writing courses at other universities, and who are effective and mature writers, receive appropriate credit for that prior academic work. We don't want to make students repeat work they have already done or have to take courses that don't suit their level of maturity and development. Thus, we recognize four ways that a student can earn equivalency credit for ENG 111 and/or ENG 112. (See below for additional details.)

Advanced Placement Exam

For incoming first-year students, AP exams taken in high school

Students who score 3 or above on the AP English exams may earn 3 or 6 credits toward fulfilling the composition requirement of the Miami Plan. Below is the table indicating what course credits students will receive for which AP exams and scores. If students receive 3 credits for ENG 111 and 3 credits for ENG 112, then they have completed their 6-credit composition requirement at Miami University. For official information regarding AP credit, please visit the Registrar’s website.

First-Year Portfolio

For incoming first-year students only, you submit a portfolio of work you have done. For further details, see http://www.units.muohio.edu/portfolio/. Submit your portfolio anytime between May 1 and June 25 the summer before enrollment.

Please note: For students who take the AP exam(s) and who also submit a first-year portfolio, you can receive credits from the one or the other, but not both combined. (For example, if you receive three credits from the AP exam and three credits from the portfolio exam, you will be awarded three credits, not six.) In instances where the AP exam(s) and the portfolio exam generate the same result (the same number of composition credits awarded), the AP exam score takes precedence.

Course Equivalency Transfer

For transfer students, you transfer a course you have taken at another university that is deemed equivalent to ENG 111 or ENG 112.

(a) If the course is already recognized as equivalent, then it is listed in the transfer database at http://www.transfer.org. Sometime after you have officially transferred to Miami, check your transcript to make sure that the Registrar has processed this course transfer and assigned it to your Foundation I composition requirement.

(b) If the course is not already recognized as equivalent, you apply to the Composition Office for review of the course. For procedures and cover sheet, download a Course Equivalency Transfer Credit Sheet (PDF file).

Transfer Portfolio

Students transferring in their junior or senior year may submit a portfolio of writings.

Collective set of writing is deemed to be equivalent to work done in ENG 111 or ENG 112. (Assumption here is that you do NOT have a single course that is equivalent to ENG 111 or ENG 112, but rather that you have done the equivalent kind of writing across several courses.) For procedures and cover sheet, download a Transfer Portfolio Credit Sheet (PDF file).
