Responsible
Conduct of Research Training
|
The RCR Training
Program consists ofseminars and resources that are designed
to enhance
teaching and learning opportunities of research
practices for university faculty, staff and students.
|
 |
| |
|
| |
NSF,
NIH and the contractual obligation of researchers:
Principal Investigators
granted research funds from an agency requiring
RCR training
are
required to have completed the training within 180 days of notification
of this requirement.
Graduate and undergraduate
students, post-doctoral scholars, and other research personnel
who are supported or whose research activities are supported
by funding agencies requiring RCR training are required to
complete the training. |
Colleges, departments,
and individual faculty members may adopt
training requirements that is not contingent on the
funding source.
|
| |
| Formal
Training: |
The principal means of formal training
is a series of six interactive sessions focusing on
particular
topic of RCR. The Office
of Research Integrity is the
central resource for the nine topic areas identified
as important to research activities. Through outside
of class short case
study readings, video vignettes,
speaker
presentations,
and
small
group
discussions, the nine core area’s are addressed
during six 45 minute sessions at Miami. These sessions
are:
|
1. Research
Misconduct
2. Data Acquisition,
Management, Sharing and Ownership & Collaboration
3. Mentor/Trainee
Responsibilities
4. Human Subjects & Animal
Welfare
5. Conflict of
Interest and Commitment
6. Publication
Practices and Responsible Authorship & Peer
Review
|
|
Some core area pairs are combined
into one session since the topics are closely related.
Human Subjects Research and Animal Welfare are addressed
in the same session in an abbreviated format to
relate
the conditions under which
the regulations are applicable and to describe the
requirements
for specialized training for these types of research.
|
| |
| Formal
training delivered at the department level involving
RCR issues (e.g. research methods classes, graduate
student orientations), if sufficient in length and depth
as judged by the compliance office, may be substituted
for some RCR formal sessions. |
|
Each topic-session is at least
two times per semester. The course is designed
to require 20 minutes of pre-session preparation before
a 45 minute
session.
|
| |
For relatively short-term undergraduate
participation in research at Miami, (e.g. Undergraduate
Summer Scholars,
Research Experience for Undergraduates, Action Research
in Master of Arts in Teaching courses), faculty advisors
and PI's can prescribe the reduced
session attendance based on the activities that the
supported students will be involved in. For example,
an undergraduate student assisting with data collection
perhaps should only need to attend the research misconduct
and data acquisition sessions but may not need to attend
the publication practices session if they will not
be directly involved with draftinga manuscript for
publication.
|
| |
| Conveying
concepts of sound and ethical conduct of research
to new researchers has always been the province
of faculty. Periodically, after initial completion,
of the requirements, faculty
are required to attend
two
one hour sessions
in a formal series to share their experiences and
contribute to the mentorship of Miami scholars
( 3 year intervals). |
|
| |
|
| Informal Training: |
| |
Faculty and lab supervisors are
encouraged to engage in an open relationship with their
students, post-doctoral scholars and technicians regarding
RCR issues. During training, the importance of maintaining
open lines of communication among research associates
is emphasized. Researchers are provided with the means
and knowledge of how to facilitate resolution of communication
and other problems that might affect research integrity
through their departments and the compliance office.
